This is a VERY iconic look. (And it's interesting to me that Margaret decided against wearing the veil in front of her face. I can see the argument for either; personally, I always thought In Front of the Face gave you the dramatic UNVEILING moment.)

Princess Margaret With Prince Phillip

Princess Margaret is accompanied by her brother-in-law Prince Philip during her wedding to Antony Armstrong-Jones at Westminister Abbey.

Prince Philip escorted Margaret down the aisle, which is sweet. Those of you tracking my intense nitpicking of the size of a bride's bouquet can mark in your diary that I think this one is just a TEENY bit too small but almost right. This gown is one of my own favorites. It's so simple and yet poofy!

Not much of a train, though. (It's nearly impossible to get enough of a train to make an impact from this vantage point, in fairness.)

Here, you can tell that the train is perfectly in proportion to the poofiness of the skirt. (I also couldn't resist one of the few color snaps that I could get.)

I appreciate how the bridesmaids here seem ever so slightly confused about where they're meant to go.

What a lot of intriguing hats!

For those who want to know: The Queen's dress is a blue-green (INCLUDING the gloves? Sometimes the Young Queen made some very eccentric choices in her accessories), and the Queen Mum was in a sort of silver. Yes, Tiny Charles is wearing a kilt, which is great.

"But which one of the people in this crowd is the Queen?!" "My God, Barney, it's the one who looks like the Queen! Compare the faces to some stamps!" "I CAN'T." "Ugh, here, give it to me. I'll just circle her face. Jesus."

This photo is amazing to me. From left to right, we've got: Princess Alice (in a really hideous hat); The Duke Of Gloucester, who appears to be sneaking a SANDWICH?!?!?!; Queen Ingrid Of Denmark, who looks like she's just remembered she forgot to turn off the iron; Prince Charles, who is checking that his hair is still on; The Countess of Harewood, who is REALLY checking out Prince William of Gloucester, who is only 18 here so dial it back, lady (he died in a plane crash at 30) (she was married to a Lascelles who was flagrantly cheating on her); Earl Mountbatten, who looks like he's napping way back there; Prince Richard of Gloucester and his eyeglasses; and ANOTHER Princess Alice, who is QUITE old and possibly hates everyone. She led a very interesting life.

That's Princess Anne with the basket at the front. I just thought this was a great photo.

And that's Charles taking flowers out of Anne's basket and sprinkling them over her head.

Not for nothing, but she's also wearing MASSIVE DIAMONDS on that necklace. (She also wore that necklace a lot, as one might.)

A distressingly high percentage of the adults in this photo already look resigned.

"Are you sure about the framing of that shot?" "I NEED TO GET THE CHAIR IN IT, FRANCIS!!!!" While we're here, Margaret's bridesmaids are: 1. Angela Nevill, who does not have a Wiki of her own but apparently married for the first time at 50! 2. Marilyn Wills, Margaret's goddaughter, who also apparently did nothing dramatic. 3. Catherine Vesey, who was Armstrong-Jones's niece. 4. Lady Virginia Fitzoy, whose mother is currently the Queen's Mistress of the Robes at 100 YEARS OF AGE. Her name is Fortune Fitzroy and I'd like this novel immediately please. 5. Princess Anne. 6. Some other nameless children!

Naturally, Margaret landed the cover of Tatler for this one. It is "the Famous Portrait of Margaret by Pietro Annigoni Painted For Her Between 1957 and 1958," which is AMAZING and which is currently on loan to the National Portrait Gallery.

And this is the official engagement photo, while we're here. This was snapped at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, which is where the Yorks live now. As I said the last time we ran this photo: I'm obsessed with this room and would like them to leave so I can see it better.
