The veil was first won by Fred's great-great grandmother (I think that's the right number of "greats"), [whose Wiki page makes her seem like she was pretty great](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess%5FMargaret%5Fof%5FConnaught?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). She died young (it was rumored that she died by suicide but that doesn't seem to be true). This family had their fair share of tragedy; her son -- who might have been a Nazi??? It's unclear --[ died in a plane crash in 1947.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince%5FGustaf%5FAdolf,%5FDuke%5Fof%5FV%C3%A4sterbotten?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_7104075b-1591049144.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by John Mcconnico/AP/Shutterstock (7104075b) DONALDSON Mary Donaldson, fiance of Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik waves to the crowd as she arrives for her wedding ceremony at Our Lady's Church in Copenhagen, . Interestingly, [it's not a family piece, and we don't know a lot about it](https://www.thecourtjeweller.com/2016/08/crown-princess-marys-wedding-tiara.html?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_8169016d-1591049163.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Boris Roessler/EPA/Shutterstock (8169016d) Mary Donaldson Bride of Danish Crown Prince Frederik Smiles and Waves Her Hand As She Stands Dressed in Her Wedding Dress in Front of the Cathedrale in Copenhagen Denmark Friday 14 May 2004 the Church Wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson From Australia Has Started Today Members of All European Royal Dynasties Are Among the 800 Invited Guests who Attend the Wedding the Thirtyfive-year-old Heir to the Danish Thrown Met His Thirtytwo-year-old Bride During the Olympic Games in Sydney Australia in 2000 Denmark Kopenhagen Denmark Royal Wedding - May 2004 I remember that some of you mentioned Mary's neckline when Meghan and Harry got married, and I can see that. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452686a-1591049098.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Jens Hartmann/Shutterstock (452686a) Mary Donaldson and Crown Prince Frederik WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, AMALIENBORG CASTLE, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 This wedding had an unusual lot of cheek-kisses. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452702f-1591049108.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Julian Andrews/Shutterstock (452702f) Mary Donaldson and Crown Prince Frederik WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, AMALIANBORG PALACE, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 See? They look like a girl group sponsored by Talbots. ## Prince Henrik and Queen Margrethe ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681a-1591048953.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681a) Prince Henrik and Queen Margrethe WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 There were a LOT of people in pink at this wedding, to the point where I wonder if Mary told everyone that her colors were blush and bashful. ## Princess Alexandra ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452661h-1591048922.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tim Rooke/Shutterstock (452661h) Princess Alexandra WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 Princess Alexandra here was, at this time, married to Fred's younger brother Joaquim -- they got divorced the following year, and then he married someone who looks JUST LIKE MARY. She looks fab here. She was apparently very popular with the Danes (and may still be! For what I understand, she and Joaquim are on good terms). ## Sophie and Edward ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681l-1591049038.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681l) Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 Lord save us from the return of pashminas. (This color is very pretty on Sophs, though, and the tiara works well with this hair.) ## Princess Elena and Jaime de Marichalar ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681n-1591049059.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681n) Princess Elena and Jaime de Marichalar WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 I kind of love this very dramatic formal coat. God bless the Danes for making this such a tremendously formal event. As a reminder, she's King Felipe's older sister, and these two are no longer married. ## Princess Laurentien, Prince Constantijn, Princess Maxima, Prince Willem Alexander and Queen Beatrix ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681e-1591048994.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681e) Princess Laurentien, Prince Constantijn, Princess Maxima, Prince Willem Alexander and Queen Beatrix WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 Behold the Dutch! I am deeply perplexed by Maxima's coat/wrap shenanigans. ## Queen Sonja and King Harald of Norway. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681u-1591049088.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681u) Queen Sonja and King Harald WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 This is quite glam. I feel like I need to sit down every time she wears that tiara; I LOVE it. ## Letizia and Felipe ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681d-1591048984.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681d) Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano and Prince Felipe WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 DISHY! They were also in the run up to their own wedding, [which happened two weeks after this.](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/royal-wedding-rewind-then-prince-felipe-and-letizia-ortiz-04-2020/) ## Princess Martha Louise and Ari Behn ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452661bp-1591048892.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tim Rooke/Shutterstock (452661bp) PRINCESS MARTHA LOUISE AND ARI BEHN OF NORWAY WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 He is now, as you may remember, tragically dead; she has left the Norwegian royal family and has taken up with a self-styled shaman. Yes, [she does have a section on her Wikipedia titled "controversies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess%5FM%C3%A4rtha%5FLouise%5Fof%5FNorway?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io#Controversy)." ## Prince Richard and Princess Benedikte of Denmark ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452661ca-1591048912.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tim Rooke/Shutterstock (452661ca) PRINCE RICHARD AND PRINCESS BENEDICT OF DENMARK WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 She is Fred's aunt, and she looks FANTASTIC here. He reintroduced the European bison to Germany! ## Queen Sofia and Queen Paola ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681f-1591049006.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681f) Queen Sofia and Queen Paola WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 Y'all, we are seeing SO MANY formal day coats! Especially for early May! Does Denmark suffer from June Gloom? ## Crown Princess Mette Marit and Crown Prince Haakon ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681k-1591049029.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681k) Crown Princess Mette Marit and Crown Prince Haakon WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 Mette Marit had fairly recently had a baby here, which I think is why she's wearing this vaguely unusual outfit. Her head looks great, though. (And Haakon always looks great and exactly the same age. Perhaps he's a vampire.) ## Princess Alexia and Carlos Morales Quintana ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452661k-1591048942.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tim Rooke/Shutterstock (452661k) Princess Alexia and Carlos Morales Quintana WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 He's a (handsome) architect and yachtsman who maaaaaybe did some light white collar crime! She is a Greek princess who does not have an interesting Wikipedia page. Her purse is compelling though. ## Princess Caroline and Prince Ernst August ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681o-1591049069.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681o) Princess Caroline and Prince Ernst August WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 I was going to say that Caroline looks like she's soap opera villianess at the funeral of her detested spouse and then I noticed that she is actually in the company of her detested spouse! You never see them together anymore due to how they loathe one another. [The "family" section of his Wiki is i](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince%5FErnst%5FAugust%5Fof%5FHanover%5F%28born%5F1954%29?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io#Family)nteresting and tragic, and he ALSO has a "controversies" section that involves an international incident involving public urination. He also at one point drank himself into a coma, and has been a real dickhead to his daughter-in-law, if I'm recalling correctly. The Hanoverians have A LOT going on. ## Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681i-1591049017.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681i) Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 OMG Princess Madeleine, you have to step away from the spray-tan!!!!!! YOU LOOK LIKE TAN MOM. ## (Then) Princess Mathilde and Prince Philippe ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681m-1591049048.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681m) Princess Mathilde and Prince Philippe WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 So....this might be a personal best for Mathilde? She looks super in this. (And I appreciate her Sash Shenanigans.) ## Farah Pahlavi and Duchess Francesca of Habsburg ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452681q-1591049078.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Frank Rollitz/Shutterstock (452681q) Farah Diba and Duchess Francesca of Habsburg WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 So, these two. Farah was married to the last Shah of Iran until his death, and was eventually styled as Empress, [and her Wiki is extraordinarily interesting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farah%5FPahlavi?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). (The tiara in her engagement photo is STUNNING.) She's a very chic woman. Duchess Francesca of Habsburg looks eccentric and she has an incredibly long name: Francesca Anne Dolores Freiin Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kászon et Impérfalva. Her Wiki also describes her as being "amicably separated" from her husband and I love nothing more than rich artisos who refuse to get divorced for no good reason but instead just....stay married. [Her father-in-law was a fascinating man who spent much of his youth in a massive feud with Hitler, and helped 15,000 Austrians escape the Nazis, among other things.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto%5Fvon%5FHabsburg?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) ## Roger Moore and Kiki Tholstrup (his wife) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_452703j-1591049132.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Jerry Bergman/Shutterstock (452703j) Roger Moore with wife Christina 'Kiki' Tholstrup WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK AND MARY DONALDSON, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - 14 MAY 2004 Then Roger Moore showed up! ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2020/06/shutterstock_editorial_8839270a-1591049191.jpg) Mandatory Credit: Photo by Allan Lundgren/EPA/Shutterstock (8839270a) The Front Pages of Denmark's National Papers on the News That Danish Crown Prince Frederik Will Marry His Australian Girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Donaldson in the Spring 2004 Epa Photo/scanpix Nordfoto/allan Lundgren/denmark Out/ Denmark Copenhagen Denmark Royal Wedding - Sep 2003 These are "the front pages of Denmark's national papers on the news that Danish Crown Prince Frederik will marry his Australian girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Donaldson."
