## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 1

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/03/gettyimages-516664754.jpg)

Let's kick this right off with Informative Caption: "Prince Harry enters the Golden Temple in Kathmandu, which is where assistance was coordinated in the immediate aftermath of the 2015 earthquake." It's also quite beautiful and fascinating, and at least 700 years old. I know that at least one Fug National has spent quite a lot of time in Nepal, so those of you who are familiar with it, as always, please chime in! Remember how much we learned when Wills and Kate were in Australia and New Zealand?

Here, "Prince Harry helps with the restoration of Patan Palace," which was damaged in the earthquake. I feel like what he's really doing is noting that he's really quite bad at restoration.

This is the aforementioned palace; [the Kathmandu Post has LOTS of other photos of this event](https://kathmandupost.ekantipur.com/news/2016-03-20/prince-harry-visits-patan-durbar-square.html?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), which you might enjoy. Also fascinating is [the Wiki entry for Patan Durbar Square here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patan%5FDurbar%5FSquare?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest known Buddhist cities in the world.

Here, "Prince Harry is seen with tika as he visits the Red Cross preparedness Containers at Bhaktapu." I have turned to Wikipedia for my Informative Purposes, but please correct me if I am wrong. Per Wiki, the red marking on the forehead is also called tilaka, and it's a "mark of honor and welcome to guests." I assume the garland is also a traditional welcome (much as it is in Hawaii, and many other places around the world; as a parenthetical to this parenthetical, I think a flower garland has to be one of the nicest ways to welcome a person. They're so beautiful and fragrant).

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 1

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516663320.jpg)

I'm not sure what's happening here, but I suspect they're discussing something about Red Cross efforts post-earthquake -- given that she is, I believe, with the Red Cross -- although I'm not sure what that structure is. Is it shallow of me to note that (a) forearms! and (b) her sari is gorgeous? I'll off-set that [by noting that you can donate to their efforts here](https://www.ifrc.org/news-and-media/news-stories/asia-pacific/nepal/earthquake-in-nepal-68486/?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io).

"Right. So *he* thinks you should try to marry that Emma Watson, and while I agree that she's lovely, and smart, don't you think being part of the royal family would STIFLE her? I do, Harry. I really do."

## Prince Harry visit to Nepal - Day 2

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516704618.jpg)

Here, "Prince Harry tours a municipal camp for families displaced by the 2015 earthquake." As regular readers know, I grew up in Los Angeles. I have been through some big earthquakes. I literally don't even get out of my bed if it's under a 5\. (A 4.5 or whatever, you'll feel, and stuff might fall off the wall if you're right ON IT, but it's not going to be that destructive and you can ride it out.) The Nepal earthquake was a 7.8, which is....enormous. All the native Californians I knew read the magnitude and cursed. It's going to take a long time for Nepal to bounce back entirely from something so destructive, but I hope they're getting as much financial and practical support as possible.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516809342.jpg)

*The Telegraph*[ has excellent coverage of the the events of this day](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/prince-harry/12199905/Prince-Harry-earns-his-stripes-with-tiger-impression-in-Nepal-national-park.html?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), which included looking for tigers (the tigers couldn't be bothered), and Harry being reunited with one of the soldiers with whom he served on Afghanistan. (One of the reasons he made this trip was so that he could visit the home of the Gurkhas, who are Nepalese soldiers; they are famous for their bravery. From what I understand, after India gained independence from Great Britain, and was partitioned, there was a shake-up and -- okay, this is complicated and I basically just wrote three paragraphs that don't make sense. [Here's the Wiki entry about the Gurkha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurkha?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). I got REAL distracted talking about India -- which was pertinent -- and then realized I could not reduce all of, like, the effect of Indian independence of the British military into one slide. We're not even IN India here. I better brush up before William and Kate get there.)

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516779114.jpg)

Harry might be an exception to the Everyone Looks Hotter in Sunglasses rule?

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516783956.jpg)

"OH MY GOD, I HAVE SO MUCH UNREAD MAIL."

Not really. Really, "Prince Harry looks at pictures of himself crawling like a tiger, which were taken by a camera trap at the Bardia National Park, Nepal." !!!!!!!!

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516828406.jpg)

For a moment, I thought those flowers were little chili peppers, and I thought, "do you really think he needs to get any spicier?!"

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516828840.jpg)

I decided that these flowers are for Harry's hosts, and he is bringing them, rather than having been given them. When you are staying overnight at a nice, generous, hospitable widow's cottage, you bring her flowers! HARRY KNOWS THE RULES.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516828850.jpg)

As ever, Harry's interactions with the kids are a highlight.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516833710.jpg)

This was just a lovely shot. The article in *The Telegraph* explains that Harry's wearing the white cloth on his head, because the people in this village made him Head Dude -- my phraseology -- for the night, as a gesture of welcome. This must have been an amazing trip. How wonderful to meet so many people who live in such a different way than you do, who show you great kindness and generosity, and to get to experience their rituals, which are probably quite different and not at all different from your own at the same time (because we all have rituals, don't we?).

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 3

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516833802.jpg)

Also, he got to ride on a boat!

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516914594.jpg)

There was also a wreath laid "for Gurkha killed fighting for the British aboard," and naturally, that requires a quick pop back into uniform, which is surely hot in every sense of the word.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516905488.jpg)

These are the Himalayan foothills, and they demand to be hiked.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516935422.jpg)

And obviously, it's not an official visit ANYHERE if one of these three isn't made to perform some athletic feats.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516905516.jpg)

Harry's got kind of a good vertical.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516905536.jpg)

So, [*People* has excellent coverage of this portion of the trip](https://www.people.com/people/package/article/0,,20395222%5F20995246,00.html?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), which will cover what you will see in the upcoming photos. The garlands are NOT, I don't believe, to thank him for the volleyball shots. At least, not officially. (I feel you, many ladies and some dudes of Nepal.)

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516907294.jpg)

Informative Caption tells me that this is part of a Holi celebration, and Informative Wikipedia tells me, "Holi is an ancient Hindu religious festival, known as the festival of colours or the festival of love. The festival is said to signify the victory of good over evil, and the arrival of spring. It's celebrated all over India and now around the world, and is all about partying and enjoyment." SIGN ME UP.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516907322.jpg)

I can't help but think that everyone who got to paint more red on that red beard found it privately entertaining.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516917582.jpg)

This is at the home of the people with whom Harry spent the night. *People* brought us their menu, and you know I love a menu! They ate "chicken curry, rice, mixed vegetables and dhal."

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 4

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-516905494.jpg)

Watching the sun come up over the Himalayas is quite something to knock off the bucket list. I look forward to someone using this photo to illustrate a piece called LONELY HARRY ALONE AND LONELY WONDERS WHITHER HIS BRIDE??

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 5

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-517033396.jpg)

And then, finally, today, Harry met "with Nepalese students during a demonstration on a visit to Sano Thimi Technical School in Bhaktapur," which is basically code for, "looked at groovy machines for a while," which, frankly everyone enjoys.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 5

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-517032096.jpg)

SIDEBAR: Holy moly, they crammed a LOT OF EVENTS into these five days. Anyway, post technical-college (I think?) Harry met up with Nepalese President Bidhya Devi Bhandari for the Nepal Girls Summit 2016, at which he gave a speech that basically noted the importance of giving young women the same educational and career advantages that young men get. I certainly will co-sign that argument. This topic -- the importance of education for girls -- is one of the causes that Michelle Obama introduced him to, I believe. Or, rather, the importance of which she impressed upon him specifically (she gave a speech on the same topic in Cuba just now). I love the idea of FLOTUS and Prince Harry texting each other stuff now that they're friends. For one thing, I feel like if Harry were to get into some kind of Naked Vegas situation again, we could count on Michelle to speak for all of us in asking him what he was thinking.

## Prince Harry Visits Nepal - Day 5

![Prince Harry Visits Nepal](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/03/GettyImages-517060080.jpg)

Finally, he went to Kanti Children's Hospital to meet the kids; this was the scene outside. That's a lot of people! That seems slightly intense for everyone.

This is four-year-old Biplov Puri and HE IS SO CUTE. Given the choice, I am ALWAYS going to then these things on a cute baby.

[Royally Played: Prince Harry Visits NepalPrince Harry has been in Nepal since Sunday, and concluded his trip this morning...yesterday evening? Recently. (There is a big time difference between me and Nepal.) He is staying for the next week, without the press corps, to help rebuild some schools alongside fellow military veterans. It looks like it was a very interesting trip, full of beautiful temples and volleyball (!) and adorable kids and hiking and, like, a lot of time for profound thought about what it all means. He also visited places that were devastated by the earthquake, met with the Red Cross, put on his uniform, and stayed with a local family part of the time, which...my doors and windows are open the next time you're in Los Angeles, Harry. \[Photos: Chris Jackson for Getty, Ben Birchall/PA Wire, Tim Rooke/REX, Paul Edwards - Pool/Getty Images, James Whatling - Pool/Getty Images, Getty Images \]![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/03/gettyimages-516664754.jpg)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/royally-played-prince-harry-visits-nepal-03-2016/)
