Per our Informative Caption, yesterday was "the Royal British Legion's London Poppy Day," during which they attempted to raise a million pounds for veterans, and the bus is carrying around vets and celebs. And Prince Harry, who I feel like seems like a person who would delight in riding on an old bus to raise money. (He's doing a lot of good works this week.)
They picked him up at Buckingham Palace and this photo looks to me like nothing so much as him realizing he's going to miss the bus if he doesn't hotfoot it over there.
We had the shots of Harry entering this event earlier this week, but this is him with Victoria Cross and George Cross holders. (As we learned Wednesday thanks to Fug National Katrina, those are basically the highest British military honors awarded). This was snapped inside the State Apartments at St James's Palace, which I had never seen before. Shocker: IT'S GILDED. I was curious about the woman in this photo, Margaret Purves, so I looked her up. She's the only living woman to be awarded the George Cross, and she was given it by George VI when she was FOURTEEN YEARS OLD because she saved a Boy Scout and his leader from drowning. Pretty amazing stuff.
Here they all are again, with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, this time at Buck House. This whole segment of the slideshow is like, "LOOK AT THIS MAJESTIC ROOM ALSO."
Here, Letizia and Felipe were greeting the Chilean President Michelle Bachelet for, and I quote, "a Gala dinner." I LOVE this tiara. (The Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor, as always, has the deets about it.) The red lip is good on her, too.
I enjoy how doubtful Felipe seems to be of his Necklace of Great Import.*
*I know it's not technically ACTUALLY a necklace. Details.
Letizia looks good here, too -- although I may be unduly swayed by my own love of blue.
Aw. You two!
I appreciate that a horse appears to be horning in on this moment (in which I assume they're discussing whether or not Felipe turned off the waffle iron).
Imagine if she had matched her shoes to the metallic, rather than the gray!
I was going to make some comment about how royals of all countries have to eyeball such a wide variety of objects in their lives, and then I noticed that the buttonhole on his lapel matches his tie and now I am done.
For those of you interested in bearded man in uniform.
Here, they're visiting Boal, which "was honoured as the 2014 Best Asturian Village. " Presumably in part due to scupltures of sad people hugging. I wonder if the rest of the villages are like, full of jealous envy of Boal and are even now vowing to up their village game. "We WILL be more picturesque, if it kills us!"
Is this skirt LEATHER? Ding dong, Letizia!
W-A and Maxima went to Japan this week, and sadly many photos of their visit are not available to me for anything other than INSANE AMOUNTS of money. Luckily, I can bring you a nice handful of classic Maxima wackiness. I do not exactly know what's happening here, but she's kind of working it. Isn't she? Am I crazy? It's possible.
I LOVE this dress on Maxima (of course, she's wearing it with a coordinated bandage on her head, because she's still Maxima). The color is fab, and the cut is gorgeous. I can only assume her shoes are PURE LUNACY behind that hedge.
Akie Abe's black jacket may well be fabulous. Maxima is wearing a variety of sea urchins.
I LOVE this color, but I legitimately do not know if her dress is caught in her tights or what.
Informative Caption Time: "German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Philippe of Belgium, Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands and Princess Lalla Meryem of Morocco attend the Commemoration of 100th Anniversary of WWI marking one hundred years since the start of the first World War." Somewhere, Olivia Pope is making a note to get a call into Mathilde's people and get that coat for herself.
I must say, while this is totally pretty and acceptable, it's not the MOST thrilling thing CPM has ever worn. (This bouquet is exceptionally pretty, though.)
Before Chaz and Cams hauled off to Colombia this week (more on that later), HE TOO hosted the Victoria/George's Cross folks, this time at a tea at Buckingham Palace. But blah blah blah about all that, what I really want to talk about is the vast amount of sandwiches and tea cakes in this picture.
"I don't know how Kate did this holding a baby with a pillbox hat on her head without falling ass over tea kettle," they think in unison.
NO ONE visits with more livestock than the British royal family.
This is in Bogota, and this is Camilla meeting "performers from Barranquilla Carnival at a Sustainability Fair at the Ambassador's Residence." Obviously. NO ONE wears giant hats more than Camilla -- ideally ones which would begin molting at any time -- so it stands to reason that this caught her eye. A LOT of stuff has happened on this tour: Camilla was given some emeralds (as Colombia has great emeralds), there was a lot of coffee (ditto), etc.
I LOVE this girl. Charles is delighted by whatever she just told him and she is totally straight-faced and over it.
"Should I pack these beige shoes for Colombia, Kate?"
"TOTALLY."
QE2 popped over to Wolverhampton for a variety of events, and I cannot read the word "Wolverhampton" without thinking of Adrian Mole's Longing For Wolverhampton. Here, they're showing her stamps. I hope said stamps feature her face!
She also went to the Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing Centre, where she got to use her I'm Pretending to Understand What You're Talking About face.
"God Save McQueen." Very cheeky.
