1972: SUPER BOWL VI, with Carol Channing
I love everything about this image. I was trying to think what the equivalent hire would be today, and then realized... age-wise, she was 51, so it would be freaking JENNIFER LOPEZ. Mood-wise, though, it'd be more... Kristin Chenoweth. This was Carol's SECOND Super Bowl show -- the first was two years earlier, when she and Doc Severinsen and the Southern University band did a tribute to New Orleans. This one was "Salute To Louis Armstrong," alongside a Marine Corps drill team...

Andy Williams sang "Marmalade, Molasses, and Honey," and then "People," the latter of which is a real fucking bummer there for a halftime show. He also had to wait while Michigan's band did four songs first. Was the Michigan band the USC band of the 60s and 70s? You know, never turns down an invitation?

For some reason, the next photo we have is 1989; all we missed was a bunch of Up With People, and then in 1988, Chubby Checker. Oh, and in 1987, it was George Burns and Mickey Rooney singing with -- wait for it -- the USC marching band. Elvis Presto is widely regarded as one of the dumbest and worst shows, on account of the fact that he's an Elvis-impersonating magician with a hilarious name who performed the world's largest card trick... in 3D vision?!? 1990 was more marching bands, and 1991 featured a lot of Disney songs, only this time they tried to amp up the star power by having New Kids On The Block perform "Step By Step" with some children. Also, fun fact, this didn't even air during the Super Bowl. They pushed it to afterward, so they could cover Operation Desert Storm?!? Poor New Kids. They deserve more. BRING THEM BACK.

Next was the Minnesota marching band, then Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill skating to "One Moment In Time," and THEN the 1980 US men's hockey team coming out and doing... something... to "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen (an excellent choice). Gloria Estefan crowned it by singing in front of whatever this horrifying setpiece was. She deserved MUCH BETTER. She is GLORIA. Wikipedia delivered another damning factoid: "During the halftime, rival network Fox aired a special live episode of In Living Color, one of the first deliberate attempts at counter-programming. The show drew over 22 million viewers away from the Super Bowl telecast." Holy cats.

... 2004 was The Year of the Wardrobe Malfunction. At the end of "Rock Your Body," Justin sang the line, "Gonna have you naked by the end of this song," and ripped at Janet's costume. Her breast tumbled out, all the more noticeable because she had a giant sun-shaped adornment that appeared to surround/highlight a nipple piercing, and the lights gleamed off it. MTV claimed the idea had been talked about, but with the result being a red lacy bra exposed, and that the costume had indeed simply misbehaved and collapsed. Janet took all of the blame from the media and the public, and was forced to apologize. It... sucked for her.
