I JUST had to look up that Antonio Berardi that Gwyneth wore to the Iron Man 3 premiere -- the one with the poncho and the underbutt windows -- and so it's fresh in my mind that my take on that dress was: I wish it hadn't been sheer, because I love the melodrama of the cape top. And along comes Cate Blanchett in a non-sheer take on that style that also ups the game with SPARKLE. Now, I admit, I don't love the way the white piping trails down the dress. I actually might actively dislike that part, in fact. But the drama of this silhouette + her being Cate Blanchett = DELIGHT. There is a photo of her coming later in the Rooney Mara post from this premiere that really sells it, too. I'm sorry to make you wait for it, but I didn't want this thread to get derailed by discussing Rooney's getup. Wait, maybe I will just crop Rooney OUT and then use the full photo later. Ahem..

Okay, it looks sort of weird without Rooney and Todd Haynes in there to balance out the picture. But still. Look at her working that cape sleeve. She is immaculate.

Its almost like a Y-back flanked by the capelet. Confusing but also striking.

Cate, you advanced level fashionmatician, you.

Sigh. She sincerely makes potentially ridiculous things seem so sublime. It really is a strange but powerful gift.

AND THEN THIS. I hear the record scratch, then crickets, like this is a David E. Kelley show or something. I had this pegged for Kim Kardashian when it came down the runway in September, and generally, I do not believe Kim Kardashian and Cate Blanchett even exist on the same plane of the universe, so its doubly distressing to me that a SATIN PAJAMA NIGHTGOWNSIE even EXISTS IN THIS WORLD, much less made its way onto Cate Blanchetts form to SULLY IT. When a person this dignified cannot even save your clothes with a smile and a blazer, you are on the wrong track.
