This is HILARIOUSLY BAD, and it is Marchesa. Diane told Stylist magazine, "I remember my very first Golden Globe Awards dress by Marchesa [in 2005]. They'd just started out and were really good friends of mine. I loved the dress they made but it was so wrong for that occasion. You could see my belly button and everybody else was in long, flowy gowns." I like to think whenever she is dithering about what to wear, Josh Jackson holds up this photo, framed by his bed, and says, "Well, you COULD go dressed like a canopy bed in The Luxor..."
Ah, yes, the dress that birthed a million Ace Bandage jokes.
Her face is good, the color is wonderful, and the demi-caftan/capelet style is really romantic, but the parade of flowers and stuff is... not filling my bucket, as my kids' teacher would say. It's a Want To Love But Don't look for me.
I'm sure there was a story explaining the cell phone on the red carpet. Maybe she was talking to her mother. I enjoy that she MIGHT have coordinated the bling to her dress, which is a nice shade but not very flattering.
The tightness of the dress creating all that bunching really ruins whatever line it's trying to cut. The color is fabulous, and the feather is an intriguing distraction, but the execution is SUCH a thud for me.
And the back is all cutouts and bunching and weird seams. Kudos to her for fitting into it, but it's not a dress that takes kindly to being worn.
REMEMBER WHEN THIS WAS HAPPENING? You may not, because nobody knew who January Jones was back then. Josh Groban is now dating Kat Dennings. Never let it be said that he doesn't have game, y'all. (Her dress? The less said the better.)
OUCH. That is at least two cup sizes off, right? Was she black and blue the next day?
Considering it's 2005 (she was in the nominated Ray), I'm impressed this isn't weirder.
It is AWFULLY crammed with sideboob, though.
This is roughly a month before she got pregnant with Violet (she got married at 4 months pregnant in June, so I'm just guessing, not keeping her old ovulation charts or anything). She looks great in this, but the lipstick is a little clashy. IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME.
Skirt and shirt are not attached. She does better now. (Although this had some potential.) Julianna was there because she was in "The Grid" and got nominated for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie, which she lost to... someone. I've looked up so much stuff; I'm going to turn over the ball on downs here.
I would take The Marg's outfit over this version.
This would be fetching in her boudoir, as she powder-puffs her face and sings about going to the movies with her rich, and kind of hot boss and that orphan kid he bought for publicity.

I DID NOT REMEMBER THIS PAIRING. (Adam Duritz did very well for himself, eh?) I wonder if this night was awkward, because Claire Danes was still with Billy Crudup, who'd left MLP for Claire in late 2003 while MLP was SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT WITH THEIR CHILD.
Sandra was still married to Alexander Payne at this point, I believe, and was there in support of Sideways (in which she also appeared). This gown started out in a pretty place but then took a crooked left turn to Hmmmtown.
Sweet God, Fergie, GET AHOLD OF YOURSELF or at least of your ladies.
Not my favorite of hers. It's like she tried to use a giant belt buckle as underwire.
She won for "Closer" and this dress feels SO Of An Era to me. I'm not even sure it's THAT era so much as... the Reality Bites days. It's very Laleina Pierce.
I think I might spy a bow on her hip, but... in general, it's better than a lot of Diors now.
Portia looks good here. I think long hair suits her way better than the pseudo-Ellen she's sporting now.
She was on CSI: Lieutenant Dan at this point, and apparently decided someone had put out an APB on her abs.
Look at those over-rosy cheeks! She's a lot sleeker now -- then again, she was, what, 17? Of course she wore this.
Ugh, this is hard to see. I never thought much of or about Denise Richards, but when Brooke Mueller went into rehab and Charlie Sheen was busy being Charlie Sheen, she took in their twin boys -- on top of her own three children. That those boys could lean on her, at least, earned Denise some Forever Points with me.
Side abs: all the rage.
True or false: Maggie Grace was the January Jones of 2005. I mean, it's probably false, given that January is in an artsier show in a more adult part, but Maggie was the fresh-faced lovely blonde in Lost and everyone assumed that cast would take the world by storm.
I BELIEVE this is Versace, and it's also Verblahce. HA HA HA HA HA are we only halfway through this thing?
... Do we think that thing stayed up all night? No, right? There was at least one hurried dash for the bathroom.
This is her Aeon Flux hair, I think. Sometimes I get impatient with how Charlize just throws on a dress and doesn't go to any other effort, and that is certainly on display here.
From his Speakeasy period. Which I infinitely prefer to his current Steven Tyler period.
ENTER THE CRAZY. This dress could as easily turn up now, actually, come to think of it. Everything old is new again.
This is, of course, Carolina Herrera. And while it would grow to be somewhat tired after a time, this is pretty cute on her here; if only she'd used some accessories.
Great lipstick, but you're not at the beach, kid. Ditch the cover-up.
Madam Messing's Saloon and Lady Parlour opens in five minutes.
Lots of people liked this at the time. I think it looked crispy and uninspiring. That lipstick is pure bombshell, though.
THIS is Calvin Klein, as far as I can tell, and it's... totally okay. I was wondering the other day if Hilary Swank will ever again be in anything I will see, so I looked it up and she's starring in "The One Percent," a STARZ show from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu about, ahem, "organic farming." One strike against it. But it stars Ed Helms AND Ed Harris, two Eds of whom I approve, so maybe?
One of my favorite TV redheads.
I love parts of this, and am unsure about others. Teri was always pretty charming on DH, although in the final season she was marooned in her own storyline and it felt like maybe nobody wanted to deal with her. And I hate to think that's true, because I just saw her episode of "Chopped," and she took it SO endearingly seriously and actually really seems to know her way around a kitchen. So I'm on board with The Hatch now and retroactively hope everyone else was too.
Those are some precariously bobbled boobs.
I wasn't familiar with Alysia until Orange Is The New Black, but it turns out she had a part in Sideways (and other stuff, too -- her resume is very long -- but that's the reason for her Globes invitation). Her ensemble is a little Iris McKay -- THERE'S a reference a few young'uns won't know -- but it's also a nice change of pace, in a way.
And Hans Zimmer wore his own monogrammed slippers.
And Helen Mirren wore a satin cape pinned to her shoulders.
And Ian Somerhalder wore a neck beard.
