She was the first on the red carpet, and she'll be the first in our slideshow. Will she be the first in the voting too?

Taraji P. Henson in Alberta Ferretti

This entire look was sublime on her. She did not hold back.

Brie Larson in Oscar de la Renta

I actually like this better than the Gucci she wore last year, when she won.

Kirsten Dunst in Dior

This was custom, commissioned from a 1952 sketch. It's simple but MARVELOUS.

Shohreh Agdashloo

Very glam.

Busy Philipps in Elizabeth Kennedy

Cool and unusual is her MO lately.

Laura Dern in Rodarte

Can we just note that in Wild, Laura Dern played Reese Witherspoon's mother, and in Big Little Lies she's essentially Reese's contemporary? (They are a decade apart.) This speaks to how youthful they BOTH are, frankly. Also this dress is great.

Meryl in Elie Saab

I know some were horrified by the pants aspect of this, but here -- for me -- is the main reason I loved it: It came out of LEFT FIELD for me. It felt capital-F FASHION in a way that Meryl usually eschews, which telegraphed to me just how stoked she really was about the record 20th nomination and how much she was ready to make it a statement outfit. I appreciated that she went for full glamour. She MAYBE could have done her hair? But whatever. She's still Meryl, so she's still gotta act like she at least PARTLY doesn't care.

Ava DuVernay in Ashi Studio

Beautiful lady in beautiful blue.

Allison Schroeder in Leanne Marshall

I didn't want this to be lost in the shuffle. It was so unique. Also, she wrote Hidden Figures, which I really adored, so three cheers.

Viola Davis in Armani

Does anyone have a more unerring sense of occasion?

Octavia Spencer in Marchesa

I think all the ladies from HF must have gotten on a conference call and been like, "Slay? SLAY."

Isabelle Huppert in Armani

The dress is lovely to me, but the belt and the pedicure and the lipstick all have such great attitude.

Auli'i Cravalho in Rubin Singer

She must have felt like a goddess.

Emma Stone in Givenchy

This was divisive, but I loved the fringe and her entire head, so I'm allowing it.

Nicole Kidman in Armani

This was ALSO divisive, and while I confess to wishing it was a color, I sometimes -- weirdly -- think color can wash out Nicole a lot as well. Here, she managed to pop thanks to the details and that lip color. It's a magic trick.

Amy Adams in Tom Ford

Don't be fooled by the backdrop; she wore this on TV, but this was a better photo.

AND NOW THE WORST DRESSED: Naomie Harris in Calvin Klein

I wanted to like this. I could not. The old Dior director, Raf Simons, has taken over Calvin Klein. Will he ruin it too?

Priyanka Chopra in Ralph & Russo

I confess to being in love with this material, but something about this flattened her out and came across too constricting. It's someone's dress; just not hers.

Faye Dunaway

She also wore this on TV, which you probably knew, because the clips of That Big Moment have circulated so much. It looks like it's self-removing.

Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad

I've decided this is just way, way too much. WAY too much. Also... I know people went nuts for it, but may I just say that I think it's weird a grown person curled up and took a nap in the middle of a major industry event -- and indeed, at which her husband was representing a nominated film? She spent a bunch of time coyly curling herself into his neck on the red carpet, too, in a way that felt more performative than they usually are. The whole night was odd.

Felicity Jones in Dior

Nope. This is lifeless.

Teresa Palmer in Prada

This chops her up into so many bits. I feel like the belt is there only because the rest of the bodice would seem INTERMINABLY long without it, but it's not right WITH it either.

Jessica Biel in Kaufmanfranco

Sigh. I have never been a fan of when metallic dresses look like they're peeling and flaking like so much zombie flesh. But I could have loved this concept if it was a color. Because the necklace is AMAZING but it's way, way too much on top of a gold dress.

Dakota Johnson in Gucci

Oh, lord, no. WHY.

Ginnifer Goodwin in Zuhair Murad

This dominated her enormously.

Faye Dunaway

Sorry, Faye, you're in here twice. You'll probably split your own vote, but I think each outfit merited inclusion.

Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton

She wore a perfectly lovely one to the afterparties that should've gotten the nod here. This is too costumey.

Salma Hayek in McQueen

Ditto.

Jennifer Aniston in Versace

Donatella rarely does her right. I wish she'd switch stylists and really uncork a bit.

Janelle Monae in Elie Saab

I wrestled with this, but ultimately, there is just way too much happening here for me to sign off on it. Many of Janelle's stuff would need editing on other people but works on her; this, I think, is pushing the limits of what even she can carry.

Fug Nation's Best and Worst of the 2017 Oscars
I have to tell you, I think this year's Oscars was fairly well-dressed -- or at least, the stinkers weren't as potent or many as usual. This poll is, still, an unscientific list culled from things worn to The Main Event that we all liked, things we liked even if you thought we were batshit, and things you liked better than we expected. (The post-parties, less public but no less glitzy affairs, will be covered separately; there's not quite the same level of risk there as there is in attending a major TV broadcast.) I don't think we left off anyone egregious, but if we did... well, you can be sure it will come up on Judgment Day, and we'll be roundly punished in the afterlife.
