This episode opens and closes with Charles preparing to tread the boards, and then performing a monologue, the better to draw the parallel. He recites, "For you have but mistook me all this while, I live with bread like you, feel want, taste grief, need friends: subjected thus, how can you say to me, I am a king?" Translation: MAN PAIN.

This is the scene in which Charles is at dinner with his language coach in Wales, and his skeptical wife, and he watches sadly as they jointly put their child to bed. The wife later says he looked "shattered" by it, as if it's something he'd never seen parents do before. O'Connor is super in this scene, friendly but slightly awkward with all and sundry, and the clear thesis from Peter Morgan is that the Queen and Philip basically blew off parenting.

This entire scene actually IS in Caenarfon, the site of Charles's investiture. That's pretty cool.

Anne's looks like it has a child's ruffly underpants pinned to the back, yet it's positively tame compared with the Queen Mother's. I am not entirely convinced that isn't a furry Muppet arm that will uncoil and hand her a drink.

In another stunning replica of real-life cranial chicanery, the Queen appears to be wearing a mind-control apparatus that has turned her into an automaton.

One thing that O'Connor does lean on a bit is furrowing his nose such that he appears to be grappling with a sinus infection.

I could have built that.

I laughed out loud at this shot of Philip being hugely churlish about listening to a dull sermon, while Anne appears to be pondering whether the Queen Mum had motive for stealing the last scone at breakfast and Elizabeth looks very smart in a metallic suit that matches her lid better than it seems in this photo.

Philip takes out his masculine frustration in his polo cage, or whatever you call it. Basically, he sits astride a wooden "horse" and swings the polo mallet around, hitting balls as hard as possible; somehow they all go against the wire and then back down to the ground, rather than ricochting and bonking him in the head. Anyway, FOREARMS.

I LOVE this shot of Edward and Andrew (ugh) bouncing into the living room to watch the moon launch. The bits where the kid play in the palace like it's just a normal house are really cute.

This is of course the best hat anyone wears, ever. The delight on Erin Doherty's face as Anne plonks one onto her sleeping grandmother's face is really cute.

I was trying to get a shot of Anne's pink outfit, which meant we missed Elizabeth's, but you already know what it looks like: pale blue, plain, etc. They have an extra on the left in a similar pink to Anne's AND a similar updo, as if they just ran out of ideas on this day.

Helena Bonham Carter makes two appearances here, one wordless, and then one here to say, "You don't want to talk about CHILDREN, do you," to a random lady, which is amusing but also completely incongruous. They must all have been paid a lump sum rather than a per-episode fee. Many shows will book an actor for, say, 15 out of 22 episodes, or 7 out of 10, or whatever, to avoid paying them the full rate for just a stray line or appearance here and there. This show does not seem to worry about that. I do also wonder if they WAY overshot, and that's one reason why it took so long to deliver episodes. For all we know, there are entire arcs that got cut.
