## The Backstabber

This is the actor playing Geoffrey Howe, whom as you can tell [is really very good casting](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03469/Geoffrey%5FHowe%5F3469218b.jpg?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). I like to imagine him looking in the mirror every morning, saying to himself, "Hang in there, mate. They'll need Geoffrey Howe someday, and when they do, you'll be ready." AND HE WAS.

## The Breakdown

It was as uncomfortable watching her make Thatcher cry as it is to listen to her.

## The Game

There is a scene early on where Charles and Diana meet up just outside William's school, then get in the same car so they can arrive together for his rugby game. Once there, Diana leaps up and down cheering and Charles is reserved and claps only awkwardly. It's okay that he's not demonstrative! Not everyone is! I do not PERSONALLY relate to that, as I LOVE a game. But this in and of itself is not a character flaw, as long as William feels supported. However...

## The Heir

... only Diana hugs William goodbye. Charles pats him on the shoulder and says, essentially, "Jolly good show, old bean." And then William looks sadly after him. This is so manipulative, show!! There are plenty of reasons to be annoyed with Charles! One of which is that he's a complete shit to Diana in the car afterward. I do think he loves those boys, and always has, and simply had very distant parents as his own example and had to learn his own way.

## The Meeting

This shot of Diana sitting down to her meeting -- which is just supposed to be about her itinerary, but somehow Charles's entire team gets to weigh in because she's half of the Waleses I guess -- is very reminiscent of the way they shoot Margaret Thatcher, right down to how recognizable the helmet hair is from behind. And this is very much like the quandary she faces: more old white dudes, and some young ones, out-shouting her and taking away some of the agency that she deserves, and not treating her seriously.

## The Tear

Margaret is not best pleased when she realizes she has no more avenues to pursue. That's twice the Iron Lady supposedly cried in front of the Queen. And twice the Queen was pretty unmoved by it.

## The Plane! The Plane!

I was surprised to see Diana flying commercial, until I saw that it was the Concorde. I was OBSESSED with the idea of flying the Concorde when I was a kid. So pointy! So fast! So expensive! Probably so great! And, so doomed, I guess, as they're no longer in existence.

## The Plaid

Diana came off the plane and stopped, stood there, looked at the teeming crowds, had a scared look on her face, then looked back at her assistant before breaking into a stiff smile. Then when she got in her car, she looked scared again. I don't get those performance choices, or writing choices. I feel like... you can have her be terrified when she's still inside the plane, look at her assistant for emotional help, and then we see her flip the switch and go outside. I feel like we understand where she is emotionally; we didn't need one of these moments that makes no sense because literally everyone on the ground watching would have been like, "Look at that, she's shitting bricks!"

## The Ball

She did it again here, seeming really silent and dumbfounded and bland, even though ALLLLL these people love her.

## The Entrance

And she entered this ball, with all eyes on her, looking like she was going to her own funeral. This entire tour, Emma Corrin plays her like she's comatose.

I put this shot in because it's replicated later. This is Diana going down to an event where everyone adores her, claps for her, welcomes her openly, worships her. Later, it's not the case.

## The Moppet

This is Diana hugging the AIDS patient, which is very cute. If your heartstrings do not get tugged at this, then you do not have heartstrings. (Apparently Charles was missing his.)

## The Grief Bangs

Camilla's hair is very very hurt by the realization that Britain will always hate her. Luckily for her, this is not entirely true. I think some Brits find themselves liking her until they're reminded that history wants them to hate her.

Nowhere near as enfeebled or hoarse -- or halting of speech -- as Anderson plays her. I couldn't find a news clip of anyone pushing on her in the car and noticing her breaking face, as this is meant to be, but in that one I did think you could hear hear voice break when she began speaking.

I am not saying this to be distasteful, but the way Gillian Anderson holds her mouth when she plays Thatcher ends up making her look like she's had a stroke.

I am grieving the loss of Erin Doherty in this role. The snippets we got of Anne were FASCINATING and I really would have loved for her to have her own episodes here and there. Being second in charge but inconsequential to succession, being the hard worker who felt overlooked when Diana and Fergie brought the glitz and the thrills... there's a lot to mine there. GIVE HER AN OFFSHOOT.

I'm going to miss Menzies as Philip, too. He really nailed the mannerisms, the casual cruelty and sarcasm, the small tics in the way I have seen Philip carry himself in public and which make sense for his private life. I thought he was extremely believable in every moment without attempting to be a carbon copy of the original.

And here, we have the flip side to the other shot. Before, Diana entered the room in angelic white, celebrated, aware that at the end of the stairs was adoration. Here, she's in devilish black (as costuming constructs go), aware that when she reaches the bottom of THESE stairs, she'll be met with trepidation or indifference or even outright resentment, on the fringe of the group rather than at the center of it. It's a walk of doom.

In case you were wondering what the family photo looked like. I have a very important question. Is that little blond boy on the couch meant to be Harry? Because... WHAT? Couldn't they at least put a wig on him? I also very much enjoy HBC's expression, and that several of the younger kids are making the exact awkward-kid-smiles that my own do.
