This IS kinda Peak Jolie for me, though. (Here she's talking to George Pennachio, a local LA entertainment reporter whom I am VERY accustomed to seeing on my TV standing outside the Governor's Ball.)

For reference, this is 2001, which is during the Billy Bob Thornton years. He did not come to this event, but this does open the door for me to tell the story of my best celebrity sighting (arguably): Picture it. 2001ish. My friend Carrie and I are eating burritos from Baja Fresh at the food court in the Century City mall, which at the time had a food court on the ground floor that was basically in what felt like a giant tent. That mall is right next to a bunch of offices where agents and entertainment lawyers work, and very close to the FOX lot. Anyway, I am about to bite into my Baja Chicken Burrito when a hush falls over the food court. And I look up, and there are Angelina Jolie and BBT, both wearing leather pants, MAKING OUT in the middle of the mall, standing next to a mildly aggrieved looking older man who had to have been one of their accountants or lawyers. Now, in LA in general, but ESPECIALLY in Century City, people generally act VERY COOL around celebrities but this time everyone was staring. Eventually they came up for air and left and the room just EXPLODED into chatter. It was pretty great.

James Haven is, of course, Angelina's brother with whom she was so affectionate when she won her Oscar (that was the year previous to this). Shoutout to the Westwood CPK back there, which wasn't there when I went to UCLA. I wonder if it surpassed the Olive Garden as the place where students go on a really nice date. (In 1994 in Westwood, if a boy took you to the Olive Garden, HE LIKED YOU.)

I also want to shout out Stan's Donuts behind her, there -- a neighborhood legend for UCLA students that just closed forever due to coronavirus/rents. Also important is that right out of frame, on the other side of the street, is Maloney's, the college bar at which I spent approximately...85% of my time.
