Get ready for Maxima and W-A to go to a LOT of fancy weddings in this slideshow! This was prior to their own wedding and Maxima is SO shiny! (It's the wedding of Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien; Constantijn is Willem-Alexander's younger brother.)

"WE ARE REALLLLLLLY HAPPY!!!!" One of my favorite things about these two is how much they clearly ADORE each other. I would be DISTRAUGHT if they were to split up. (That is not going to happen.)

May, 2002

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tim Rooke/REX/Shutterstock (382850ar) PRINCESS MAXIMA AND PRINCE WILLEM ALEXANDER THE WEDDING OF PRINCESS MARTHA LOUISE AND ARI BEHN AT NIDAROS CATHEDRAL, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY - 24 MAY 2002

This is the wedding of Princess Martha Louise of Norway and Ari Behn, and Maxima looks EXTREMELY 2002 here. She sort of looks like a Really Together Britney Spears. (Martha Louise is Prince Haakon's older sister, but they changed the primogeniture laws too late for her to get to inherit the throne. She also is the one who claims she can communicate with angels and is, I think, kind of a crackpot. She also got in trouble for her professional association with a British clarivoyant and has since moved to LA. She and Behn have since divorced, and sadly he died by suicide last year.)

I enjoy that this hat is SO BIG that Willem-Alexander has to stay quite far away from Maxima. Here, they're attending the wedding of Prince Johan Friso and Mabel and this is a downer because he's DEAD NOW. (He's the one who died after being in a coma because he was in an avalanche.) His Wikipedia is VERY dramatic, even leaving the coma out of it, because Mabel -- the bride! - used to date a drug lord! And not just any drug lord, a drug lord so famous that he ALSO has his own Wiki page.

(Informative Caption said they were attending the wedding of "Prince Pieter and Christiaan Holland," and I was like, I can't believe I don't remember a big splashy gay royal wedding!!! Here, they were meeting Sultan Qaboos bin al-Said in Muscat, Oman, but this coat is AMAZING and deserves another airing. The Sultan's Wiki page is DRAMATIC; MI6 helped him overthrow his father. He loves the pipe organ, and is a fan of ham radio and also it seems like when he dies, it's gonna be a huge mess to figure out who takes over because he has no heir and decided he was going to write the name of his successor in a sealed envelope. So that'll be interesting.

Prince Nikolaos's father is the former King of Greece. He is King Felipe of Spain's cousin, and also VERY distantly related to the Brits through Philip AND his mom is Queen Margrethe of Denmark's sister. Man, all these people are related somehow.

Here's my thought about what Maxima might wear for this week's state dinner: It depends on her tiara. If she goes for the rubies -- WHICH I LOVE -- she will probably wear red. My only thought about why she might not wear red, which she does love, is that Letizia wore red when they visited London, and she might not want to fall into the Who Wore It Best? trap.
