2010: Carey Mulligan in Lanvin

This was the year she came to the fore with An Education. And that dress is a crinkled wrinkled mess. I love the idea of the hip ornament, but WHY is the rest of it undermining everything?

2010: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

This is a rare miss from her indeed. It's maybe the worst thing we've seen on her in the past decade. Which is good news, because it was quite a while ago, and also, it makes me appreciate how generally great she is with gowns. And great she is, period.

2011: Kate Mara in Herve Leger

This is what happens when Blair Waldorf decides to give her basketweaving class a makeover.

2012: Michelle (in Valentino) and Busy

This is not a worst for Michelle; I like elements of this, if perhaps not the matching shoes. But it's REALLY not great for Busy over there. I saw this and thought, generally, "Oh, wow, how far they've come; Busy's style is way better," and also, "I love that they still are each other's ride-or-die," and finally, "I wish Michelle woud put some tint back in her hair because it's so much nicer on her."

2012: Heather Morris

I'm sure this was one of the early instances of us yelping, "FINISH YOUR SKIRTS."

2012: Zoe Saldana in Givenchy

I might have liked this better if it wasn't so centered on a white tank top that looks JUST like the ones I buy at Old Navy.

2013: Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli

This is so depressing. I'm always baffled by actresses who KNOW they're going to win, or at least are 95 percent sure, going off the rails. I know Fantine's life was a bummer, but COME ON.

2013: January Jones in Prabal Gurung

My kids really like to tie their napkins around their necks, and so I think this dress would be their platonic ideal.

2013: Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

This dress is here not because it's inherently bad, but because it's an encapsulation of all her tics: a sweetheart neckline, her favorite cut, and way too tight.

2013: Julianne Moore in Chanel

This is not that far removed from the design and color scheme of the OTHER awards-season Chanel she wore that was disappointing. This one is worse, because of what it's doing (or NOT doing) on her bodice. But I think she needs to divorce Karl.

2013: Sigourney Weaver in Lanvin

This was the heinous gown that people joked freely was on backwards... and then it turned out she DID put it on backwards. I don't think she's ever said why; the other side is just a V-neck, wrap-style, whereas this looks like she stapled a throw-pillow to her chest.

2014: Cate Blanchett in Givenchy

I cannot with this fancy napkin, either.

2014: Claire Danes in Vionnet

This ENTIRE dress should have been the blue part, right? It looks Made On A Budget this way.

2014: Rose Leslie in Temperley London

People have asked us about how to mix patterns. My answer is: I don't know, because I'm not good at it, but I'm PRETTY SURE this is absolutely not what to do.

2014: Julia Roberts in Valentino

And then, The Great Gumby Vulva of 2014. (I feel like this went so badly that she's never gone out on a real limb again, and I am sad about that. It's okay, Julia! Dust yourself off and try again, as Aaliyah once sang.)

2014: Kerry Washington in Prada

She was pregnant at this time, but that's not my beef with this. I JUST think it looks terrible.

2015: Andrea Riseborough in Escada

This is a rough draft, right?

2015: Laura Carmichael in Vionnet

This is like trying to turn a dress you wore to a Champagne brunch on the deck of your yacht in St. Tropez into a suit.

2015: Rosamund Pike in Dior

This is another heavy, shapeless, depressing piece of cloth.

2015: Julianna Margulies in Giambattista Valli

Poorly engineered, with a slit in a terrible place.

2016: Eva Longoria in Julien Macdonald

This looks like it's supposed to go on a person whose waist is where Eva's hips are. Also: fugly.

2016: Kate Mara in Valentino

I'm sorry, what? You strung up a dress from a necklace and then threw in some elastic cords to try and chafe some ribs? GREAT IDEA.

2016: Priyanka Chopra in Monique Lhuillier

I am almost never a fan of a dress burping tulle at the bottom, but I PARTICULARLY don't like when it's beige tulle that adds nothing attractive to ANYTHING ELSE that the dress is attempting.

2016: Susan Sarandon and Eva Amurri

Eyeroll. Susan wore that on a night when her duties were, in part, to introduce the Dead Person Montage. Eyeroll x2.

2016: January Jones in Schiaparelli

That is a LOT but I think a big part of the problem is that her styling is quite messy.

2016: Julianne Moore in Givenchy

Unflattering as heck. She looks like radioactive asparagus.

2017: Emma Stone in McQueen

We just revisited this as one of the worst gowns of 2017, but I can never complain about it enough. So: AAAARGH.

2017: Natalie Portman in Dior

She was pregnant, and I think also sort of bummed out that her Oscar chances were losing steam and yet she wasn't at home putting up her feet. But this is just the least inventive approach for dressing a pregnant lady. Let's just put some scrunchies on her arms! Done.

2017: Brie Larson in Jason Wu

This one stresses me out. It was custom made. WHY is it designed to look like one of her boobs is slowly inflating and shifting to the right? It is such a WEIRD thing to do to a woman's silhouette.

2017: Kerry Washington in Cavalli

No no no no no.

2017: Julie Bowen in J. Mendel

NO NO NO NO NO. Good god this was awful, and we also griped about THIS one at the end of 2017, and we will never stop.

I will ALSO never get tired of mocking this one, although now that we're at the end of the slideshow she at least seems like a super fun person to drink with at the SAGs bar.
