Naomie Harris (in Zuhair Murad) and Afua Hirsch

Naomie looks fantastic in this. With her is Hirsch, a former Guardian legal columnist who made headlines in the UK for saying the statue of Admiral Nelson in Trafalgar Square is a symbol of white supremacy and should be removed. 

Tessa Thompson with Marai Larasi

If Marai -- of feminist organization Imkaan (which campaigns against violence towards black, minority ethnic and refugee women and girls) -- looks familiar, it might be because she walked the Golden Globes red carpet alongside Emma Watson. And Tessa's dress is JUST SO GOOD. Absolutely one of my favorites of the night. 

Andrea Riseborough (in Elie Saab)

Andrea looks suitably dramatic, although I think she has not quite found a hairdo that sings. She brought Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, director of UK Black Pride and the trustee of an LGBTQ charity called Stonewall. She famously refused an MBE in 2016.

Angelina (in Ralph & Russo) and Loung Ung

This dress on Angelina reminds me so much of the black Versace that birthed the Angelina's Leg memes. She is... consistent. Angie brought Loung Ung with her -- she is the author and activist who wrote First They Killed My Father, which Angelina adapted into a film. 

Gemma Arterton (Alberta Ferretti) with Eileen Pullen and Gwen Davis

Gemma starred on the West End in Made In Dagenham, based on the true story of 187 women -- including these two -- who walked out of Ford’s Dagenham plant in 1968 to protest the pay and treatment gaps between male and female workers. (It was also a movie in 2010 starring Sally Hawkins; I hope she met them too.) I love that she brought them. It feels very personal.

I downloaded an extra picture by mistake, but it's not a hardship, as it just means we get to pause and look at this outfit again. It's so dramatic and lovely. She looks divine from top to toe.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior

This is elegant. Jennifer doesn't look entirely at home in it -- honestly, it has a bit more of a Natalie Portman vibe to it -- but I'm not complaining because at least she's getting sent something normal and that isn't underpants-based.

Haley Bennett in Chloe

It's kind of fun to see someone wearing Chloe, which doesn't happen that often. That said, I think this is really bulky on her, and she is ALSO having some hair issues that I think stem from an awkward grow-out phase from a very short cut. 

The open back is kind of funky, though. The front lets the whole thing down.

Kate Mara in Dior

That's a very nice Dior that needs a hella-hoik.

Helena Bonham Carter (with James Ivory)

Safe bet that this is Vivienne Westwood. Her handbag makes me laugh given that she's been cast as Princess Margaret for seasons three and four of The Crown. Honestly, it looks like she made it herself from a mail-order kit.

Rebecca Ferguson in Stella McCartney

She looks tremendous, and I LOVE the dramatic sleeves. Stella is definitely making the case that she can handle big-stage drama with class, should anyone in need of a wedding dress from a British designer come a-knockin'. 

Natalie Dormer in Alberta Ferretti

This is custom, and it's... I mean, it FITS, at least. But I think the sheer cape looks really inexpensive when it could have been a bit more lush. By her arms, it almost looks like it used to be attached to something and ripped so she improvised. I'm sure that did NOT happen, but it's not a great design.

Karen Gillan in Vera Wang

Then again, there is a worse version of everything, and I think Vera Wang has delivered one.

Cressida Bonas in Armani

She looks REALLY cute. That's a great Armani, and I feel like a LOT of people must have been looking around and wishing they'd made this choice.

Salma Hayek in Gucci

Look at her, getting the good Guccis for a change. I'm pleased.

Isabelle Huppert

At press time I didn't have a credit for this, but Armani is always a fair guess for her; I bet that's what it is. She looks totally glamorous, as usual. Very Major Movie Star

Caitriona Balfe in The Row

The Row is a really unusual red carpet choice, which is cool to see, but this gown is such a mess -- it's like the Olsen Twins decided to redesign the protective smocks at their salon.

Emma Roberts in Schiaparelli

I know she shares a name with Emma Samms, aka Fallon Carrington #2, but that's no reason to steal her wardrobe.

Greta Gerwig in Jonathan Cohen

That's a neat dress by a designer I hadn't heard of, so: happy surprises. But the hair looks way over-teased, like someone just ruffled the hell out of it when she got out of the limo. Maybe she got carsick and had to ride over with her head out the window.

Ruth Wilson in Dior

Sure! This suit looks nice on her. I know you NEVER hear me say this and will be shocked, but: Are the shoes actually TOO elaborate with it, perhaps?

Gugu Mbatha-Raw in vintage Cardinali

Stunning.

Lily James in Burberry and Gemma Arterton in Alberta Ferretti

I downloaded this before I found a pic of Gemma with her activist dates, so we get her twice. Lily looks tremendous, although I never really wish for dresses whose bodices look like long-line bras.

Hmm. For a dress that's so shiny, it's also a tad severe. And perhaps tight. I'd be down with the sleeves if it had a v-neck.

Leslie Bibb in Yanina Couture

She looks very nice. I didn't download a picture of her with Sam Rockwell because he looks totally perplexed in almost every single picture from the night, as if his body has been inhavited by an alien who does not understand WTF this shebang is and wonders if ALL Earth parties involve giving each other trophies.
