10th March 1965: British actor and singer Julie Andrews poses with other cast members of director Robert Wise's film, 'The Sound of Music,' at the film's premiere, Hollywood, California,. This is a photo of them all at the premiere, which was 56 years ago. The girls all appear to be wearing the costumes from the "So Long, Farewell" scene at the Von Trapp mansion, which WAS a big fancy party so maybe it's apt? Or... were they forced to PERFORM at the premiere? Interesting if 1956's version of styling was, "Oh, just mail them their costumes," although I did always love Liesl's dress.

I don't know if they were dating at the time, or what (she married someone else three years later; Wikipedia page says that a few authors have claimed he was "discreetly homosexual"). Maybe they were pals, maybe not. The point is: HER NECKLACE.

The simple, fitted cut of the scapular and cowl complements the roomier style of tunic. I'm not sure how Maria's apron stays up. Magic strings? The work of a moonbeam?

The white socks and shoes don't entirely complement the gray-and-green color scheme, Captain. Perhaps if you scrapped them for a metallic.

You know, she must have had a LOT of drapes in that room. Also, I look at this and and think, "They were climbing trees? In THOSE shoes? How are their toes not chopped up?" PS Louisa clearly got the best dress, and does anyone else think Maria forgot Kurt AGAIN? Friedrich got a whole faux-lederhosen situation and Kurt just got a baggy Hawaiian shirt.

Wasn't she making these out of the fabric for her own clothes? They must have given her an enormous amount.

I always loved this particular dress on Maria, and wished she'd worn it for the romantic dance scene and the party. I think she re-wore it for the scene when they make out, though, so that's a good compromise.

Ding DONG. The Sound of Music Sing-a-Long at the Hollywood Bowl is one of the most fun events anywhere, ever. I've been a couple times, and when this moment happens -- the Captain sees Maria and Friedrich dancing and then fixes his gloves with a twinkle in his eye -- the entire crowd goes nuts. I am SO hopeful for Hollywood Bowl outdoor events to come back.

The faces on the kids here are AMAZING. Marta looks like she is terrified there's going to be a catfight, and Gretl is staring at Maria like she has TOTALLY figured out just now what "lust" means and who currently feels it. And once again the Baroness looks AMAZING.

Maria came back from the Abbey in this very pretty dress, which I guess the nuns let her keep in storage? Poor Liesl gets stuck in a lot of brown and severe button-ups from here on out.

This is a truly terrible likeness of everyone, the colors are bizarrely wrong, and WHY did they make Christopher Plummer look like a shadowy husk?
