And yet possibly not as much as the Mulleavys. WHAT EVEN IS THIS. A festering, unraveling sweater under a halter top, with lace leggings. It's what I would wear if the apocalypse came and it was this or total nudity, and EVEN THEN I would have a long think about it.

This is making way more of an attempt at cohesion than I initially gave it credit for, and it's very Super Hella Trendy and all that, but... I personally pass.

In H&M

Hailee apparently designed this with them a mere two weeks before the gala, and... it shows, I think. It looks inexpensive and imprecise to me, despite being a fab color. 

And then she brought it on down to Romperville. Which I don't like, but which I think somehow suits her better than the previous slide. Everything at the Met Gala seemed so strenuous, and this is easy-breezy for an outdoor summer concert. I know, I know, what am I saying.

This, to me, is a great blend of her actress side and her pop-star side. It's not absurd performance wear, but neither is it stodgy

She changed into this for the afterparty, which... I would not have. It looks like something you'd buy at Forever 21 because in that dressing room, with those mirrors, and in that batch of shirts, it didn't seem heinous and it kind of maybe even flattered, and then you get it home and cut off the tags and then are like WHAT DID I EVEN DO.

In Versace

I CANNOT with trouser socks. No. The dress-diaper isn't amazing either, by any stretch, but if she hoped her feet would distract people from it then SHE WAS RIGHT.

This relaxes me. I want to wear that sweatshirt on New Year's. It's sparkly, and it leaves room for food and Champs -- my two main requirements.

I have a feeling her hair is hiding a few shirt sins here.

I like the skirt enough to sign off on the whole thing.

Lovely color, but the shoes are a surrender. I was undecided then, and am still, whether the cardigan thing enhances or detracts. I'm not sure it adds anything much here...

... but once you lose it, does it feel too much like a cheerleader's outfit?

I know this has sheer bits, but I actually really like it on her. Not all sheers are created equally evil, after all, and this again seems to check the right boxes for both sides of her career. I think sometimes singers today try too hard to be edgy in ways that lead to them looking silly, and this is more elegantly grown up.

I don't love the diamond cutouts all over this; for me they're a bit busy. The floral is lovely, though, and I can forgive the rest just for the fact it isn't the next dress coming up.

A lot of you liked this more than I did. I cannot with the ponytail dresses. I could've even lived with this having a poof on the waist; I just don't know that it needed a drapery.

This is a romper, but she looks fabulous in it. I can't find anything about this not to like. Even the parts I'm not sure I should.

This was 95 percent perfect to me. It's sitting a TOUCH too low, but oh, those colors.

If we look at it from this angle only, it's bliss, so let's do that.

And then this lovely Wu sandwich is bookended by more Jingle Ball, at which she looked like a very cheerful musical paratrooper. In fact, these last slides really underscored the thesis that she's casting a very wide sartorial net right now. And that's fine -- there's no need to decide on one look and stick to it forever. I just happen to prefer when her chances are less.... crotchy.

The Bonkers Roller-Coaster of Hailee Steinfeld's 2016 Fashion

From the moment Hailee Steinfeld lit up the awards circuit for True Grit, she displayed a lot of poise and moxie. And then as her resources skyrocketed, she got a taste of a singing career, and she grew from a very pretty kid into a leggy beauty, she did what a lot of people would do in that position: She went a little fashion-nutty. This year, Hailee crossed back and forth from movies (Pitch Perfect 2) into music and back (Edge of Seventeen), and her clothes veered accordingly. Sometimes the risks she takes are really sophisticated, and sometimes they're seem straight out of the Young Singer's Handbook for How To Get Noticed. All of which is fine for a kid who's just figuring herself out, and riding whichever career wave rolls in and looks the best. But it does make for some fashion whiplash. Let's revisit, shall we?
