This event was held at the California African American Museum, and I wish -- as with the Met -- each outfit had been paraded about in front of posters explaining its provenance and meaning. This is some frothy meringue indeed.
Michelle Williams

That skirt is really pretty, and has the added bonus of looking a bit like flowers that look hotter in sunglasses. My sister had one of those music-activated dancing flower novelties when we were kids, and those wore sunglasses, so now I'm remembering a simpler time. Thanks, Michelle Williams.
Bey in Michael Costello
I was going to make a crack about Tina Knowles playing the role of Beyonce at this event, but then it turned out BEYONCE played the role of Beyonce. And she did not half-ass her crown. It almost looks like a prop left over from her pregnancy announcement photoshoot.
Tina Knowles

Apparently Tina organized this gala (it's the first one), so props to her. This ALMOST feels like it's trying to position itself against the Met Gala on purpose -- like it's the West Coast "you say fashion, we say 'wearable art'" counterprogramming. This dress is SUCH a Project Runway Unconventional Materials Challenge, but a fairly successful one. I'm pretty sure it's an homage to supergreens.

This looks like a leftover Into The Woods costume.

A wearable car wash IS art.

Yara feels a touch underdressed by comparison.
Tasha Smith

I will always lovingly remember Tasha from the ANTM season 2 acting challenge. "Poor Camille. She's CLUELESS," Tasha tsked, and we clapped.

"In and out in five minutes. That's ALL I promised Tina."
Star Jones

Of course she did.
Kris Jenner

Whoops, sorry. I snuck in a Jenner unannounced. That's poor form and I apologize.
