What a pair of dishy babes. I'm proud of the Queen for deciding she WAS going to marry this tall hot dude, and then making it happen. I've also always loved the embroidery details on this dress. ([The gown's Wikipedia entry is also fascinating](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding%5Fdress%5Fof%5FPrincess%5FElizabeth?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io).)

There are some AMAZING archival shots of the wedding day. Here, Informative Caption tells us this is "The Irish Coach, conveying the bride, H.R.H. British Princess Elizabeth and her father, King George VI, to Westminster Abbey, London, \[turning\] into Whitehall, with the sovereign's escort of Household cavalry. In the background is Admiralty Arch." This photo is amazing -- look at everyone on top of the Arch. How did they even get there?

Some of them, at least, were photographers, because this shot was taken from atop the arch. It's an AMAZING photo.

I haven't been inside Westminster Abbey for a long time but I feel like I don't recall it having this many TEXTILES inside it; I love the idea of them having to do a set-dressing for this wedding that involved hauling a bunch of tapestries out of whatever hole they've got the tapestries stored in.

"Get a framed painting, too, would you? Brilliant." Anyway, as a lover of rugs AND tapestries, of course I find this all quite delightful.

The fact that this photo is in black and white makes it feel ever so slightly like it's a cult. Informative Caption also tells me here that Elizabeth and Philip -- it JUST struck me that these are also the names of the Jenningses on *The Americans* \-- are "followed by Prince Michael of Kent and Prince William of Gloucester holding the bridal train, the eight bridesmaids, and then the bestman, the Marquess of Milford Haven." First: The words "the Marquess of Milford Haven" are fun to say. Second, THIS Marquss of Milford Haven is also a Mountbatten and Philip's first cousin. His first wife was named Romaine -- I love people named after lettuce, or perhaps lettuce was named after her?

Whoever wrote these old Informative Captions really did so in the clipped mid-Atlantic accent of a newsreel narrator: "The horse drawn Glass Coach, with the Royal newly-weds British Princess Elizabeth, and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten (Duke of Edinburgh) holding the hand of the princess inside, is accompanied by an escort of the household cavalry, on their way back to Buckingham Palace after their marriage at Westminster Abbey. This is a better look at the bridesmaid's gowns, which I think are very pretty. I love the dramatic headpieces. (I mean, you couldn't do them now, probably, but they were neat looking, then.) Speaking of dramatic headpieces, Elizabeth is of course wearing [the Russian Fringe, which famously BROKE like two hours before the wedding](https://telegraph.co.uk/luxury/jewellery/story-behind-queens-wedding-day-tiara-happened-snapped-hours/?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). This was all really very pretty. I sincerely think those bridesmaids' dresses are great. (The Queen's wedding gown always reminds me of my own grandmother's -- she did something similar with her veil, as well -- which is surely because they got married at vaguely the same time in history.)

Brief rewind to see everyone showing up at Westminster Abbey for the wedding rehearsal. George VI was very dashing, to me. (This was prior to his lung cancer diagnosis, but you can sort of tell that the war -- only two years over at this point, and the UK still on rations; rations didn't end in Great Britain until 1954 -- had taken its toll on him.)

Speaking of bridesmaids, thanks, The Sketch! Ahem: Clockwise From Top Left: *The Hon Pamela Mountbatten*: AKA Lady Pamela Hicks, and [I cannot recommend MORE that you read her memoir *Daughter of Empire* than I do right now](https://bookshop.org/a/2671/9781476733821?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). IT IS SO JUICY AND GOOD. She has LIVED a life. *Lady Elizabeth Lambart*: Does not have a Wiki!??!?!!? BUT! Her granddaughter is Rose Hanbury, AKA the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, AKA the woman that it was whispered might have been having an affair with Wills. These aristo families are VERY intertwined. *Lady Caroline Montagu-Douglas Scott*: Her Wiki has nothing juicy but I enjoy how many barrels her name has; [also married a rather big deal politician whom I suspect was tiresome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian%5FGilmour,%5FBaron%5FGilmour%5Fof%5FCraigmillar?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). *Lady Mary Cambridge:* As I've already noted, very disappointingly nonscandalous. *Princess Alexandra of Kent*: We still see her out and about on the Queen's behalf -- [she's an HRH and everything; both Philip and Elizabeth are her cousin on opposite sides of her own family tree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess%5FAlexandra,%5FThe%5FHonourable%5FLady%5FOgilvy?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) \--and she seems generally reasonable. HER wedding was also televised! She was sixth in line to the throne at this point, I believe (for reference, that's Harry's current spot; [she's now all the way down at 53rd](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Succession%5Fto%5Fthe%5FBritish%5Fthrone?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io#Current%5Fline%5Fof%5Fsuccession)). *Miss Diana Bowes-Lyon*: Also a cousin, on the Queen Mum's side. Her middle name is Cinderella, which is a lot to put on a girl. Her father had a mental breakdown during World War I, and "accidentally" (????) shot himself in the finger the night before a big battle, requiring amputation. [Her mother -- and I've gone on this deep dive before, but it bears revisiting -- had two of Diana's sisters committed and there was a mix-up over whether or not they were DEAD for year, because the person in charge of sending in that kind of intel to Burke's Peerage "was a vague person." ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John%5FBowes-Lyon?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io#Nerissa%5Fand%5FKatherine%5FBowes-Lyon)They were NOT dead. (In fact, this arm of the Bowes-Lyonses had a lot of serious problems with what had to have been some genetic issues. It's very sad.) (Also, it's hard to be VAGUE about whether or not a person is DEAD.) *The Hon Margaret Elphinstone*: SHE, on the other hand, was a secretary for MI6 (sure she was just a secretary) and ALSO a Woman of the Bedchamber for the Queen Mum. That's a real cross-over event waiting to happen. Princess Margaret: You are aware. (I feel like Mags looks sort of like Harry in this photo?)

This is tremendous. *Tatler* did this as a way to show where everyone was seated at the wedding; the *Daily Mail* did something nearly identical for Wills' and Kate's wedding, which I know because it was VERY logistically useful to me when we wrote *The Royal We.*

I don't know what the original source of this is, but I love it. It is: "A Decorative Chart of the Route Taken by the Royal Wedding Procession From Buckingham Palace Via the Mall, the Admiralty Arch, and Whitehall to Westminster Abbey, Backed by A Sun in Splendour. A Cupid with Directive Arrow Points the Way and in His Person Represents Romance and Happiness For Bridge and Bridegroom." I think it worked out, overall, pretty well!
