# This, Somehow, Is The First Keira Knightley Red Carpet Outfit We Have

Perhaps there was something in the London water in April 2001, because last year we flashed back to [Renee Zellweger wearing a surprising sheer ensemble to the *Bridget Jones' Diary* premiere](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/i-had-not-remembered-renee-zellweger-as-a-sheers-person-04-2020/), and this year I stumbled on a photo of Keira Knightley at the same party in this. (Apologies to Thora Birch for dragging her into this, but it was the best shot of Keira I had.) The context: In 2001, Keira had tricked moviegoers and even her own mother on-set as the Queen Amidala decoy in *The Phantom Menace*, but had mostly cobbled together nice reviews for smalltime work until her break in 2002's *Bend It Like Beckham*. That began shooting about two months after this photo was taken. So at this time, she'd have been a relative unknown, but maybe a One To Watch. And thus, nowhere near a stylist. I just did the math, and she was 16 in this photo. I love imagining Keira coming downstairs in a bra and her mother shouting, "Keira Christina Knightley, you go put something on over that bra *right now*," and Keira smirking, "Great, I've got just the thing," and skating out of that house on the actual sheerest and merest of technicalities.
