This is so sleek and cool on her. Yeah, I wish I could see a toe, but whatever -- it's dreamy.

Quinta Brunson

Oh, dear, we have backslid. The top is so strange and the skirt looks like she had an accident and tied a cloth around her waist.

Cate Blanchett in Alexandre Vauthier

Elizabeth Stewart says this is a re-wear from last year, and that Cate is repeating her BAFTA necklace in a completely different way. I had a feeling; if Cate is going to buy something new, I’m not sure it would be this simple. Interestingly, I think it was funkier with the long sleeves underneath.

Phoebe Bridgers

Ah, the tiresome sheers. At least this is twinkly?

Megan Rapinoe

Not a fan of this ode to Hanes.

Olena Shevchenko

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679p) Olena Shevchenko TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

Olena is an LGBTQI activist from Ukraine, and her Wikipedia page is loaded. Recently, while setting up safe spaces in Western Ukraine, she was MACED. There's also a good mic drop in there about how one of the chuch Patriarchs in Ukraine blamed Covid on homosexuals, and was sued for spreading this false information, a lawsuit that has been on pause since... he got Covid. ANYWAY. She is rad.

Veronica Cruz Sanchez

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679q) Veronica Cruz Sanchez TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

Veronica has been working for decades for women's rights to medical freedom and access to legal services. She's been fighting for tougher laws about sexual violence in Mexico (where some states view incest as consensual?!?) and (successfully) to legalize abortion. The Time story seemed to imply she's also now helping American women who are handcuffed by our inferior abortion rules, but I haven't signed up yet to read the whole thing.

Ayisha Siddiqa

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679r) Ayisha Siddiqa TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

Ayisha is a Pakistani-American climate change activist, who founded a group called Polluters Out. She is 24, and looks great, not that this is the important bit.

Ramla Ali

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679al) Ramla Ali TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

Ramla is a refugee who became the first boxer to represent Somalia in the Olympics. She also founded The Sisters Club, a place where Muslim women can learn boxing and wider aspects of self-defense. As it happens, she also knows her way around a suit.

Masih Alinejad

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP/Shutterstock (13800703j) Masih Alinejad arrives at Time's second annual Women of the Year Gala, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles Time's Second Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, United States - 08 Mar 2023

Masih is a journalist and activist who has spoken openly about the state of human rights in Iran (with a special focus on women's rights). There was apparently a plot by Iranian intelligence officials to kidnap an open critic of Iran, and it's believed it was probably her?!? And still she speaks out. Amazing.

Tiffany Haddish

Onto the other attendees! This is fun, if also a challenging slit height. But hey, her choice. I'm not the one who has to wrangle it.

Li Jun Li

I love this (which is appropriate). She looks fabulous, and what a great occasion to wear this design.

Brooke Shields

Wow those are... I mean, at this point, are they high-waited pants, or a drop-waisted catsuit?

Nalleli Cobo

She's incredible. As a kid in L.A., she led the charge to force the closure of an oil well that was poisoning the community -- and then at 19, was diagnosed with cancer. It's quite a story. That dress is gorgeous on her and I hope she had a wonderful night.

Holly Robinson Peete

I guess just the one corner of her dress came to party.

Nicole Avant

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679bz) Nicole Avant TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

Nicole used to be the US Ambassador to the Bahamas... and is married to the Netflix president. TWIST! Her father Clarence was also the head of Motown Records, and she and Ted apparently bought their massive house from none other than David Spade. Wikipedia is a blessing. Also, her dress is cool.

Kat Graham

This is the most straightforward thing I think she's ever worn? Her head-styling is superb and she looks like a million bucks, though I wouldn't have objected if someone had lent her another million in the form of a statement necklace.

Halston Sage

Speaking of needing some statement jewelry.

Lauren Bosworth

Maybe people were like, "Serious night, so SERIOUS CLOTHES." Except so many of the activists had fun with it.

Christine Ko

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679u) Christine Ko TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

And then Christine was apparently like, "Is the theme 'Imagine you are on Selling Sunset,' because I HAVE THE PERFECT OUTFIT."

Amanda Nguyen in Safiyaa

Her subtle touches give it lovely flair -- the flowers on her shoulders, the necklace (Yael Sonia), the earrings (Vartanian)... so good. (And thank you to stylists who are thorough with credits!)

Electric tangerine is definitely her color.

Caroline Wanga

She's the president of Essence, and this outfit is... an absolute hoot. I don't know what else to say.

Zuriel Oduwole

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Lisa O'Connor/Shutterstock (13798679c) Zuriel Oduwole TIME's 2nd Annual Women of the Year Gala, Los Angeles, California, USA - 08 Mar 2023

Zuriel is a filmmaker and activist who has been advocating for education of women and girls in Africa, and against child marriage. That is a great outfit, and what heavy work. Posts like this remind me that for all the crap in this world, there are REMARKABLE people who still believe in it.

Rita Moreno

Finishing with ETERNAL PIZZAZZ.
