TIME has crowned twelve new women as its WOTYs -- the usual mix of business leaders and philanthropists and a few so-called normals, with a smattering of celebrities who might be awesome but also ensure the issue gets plenty of attention. [Don't miss the story of Zahra Joya](https://time.com/collection/women-of-the-year/6150546/zahra-joya/?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), the Afghan journalist who once dressed in boys' clothes to disguise herself so that she could attend school, built a career reporting on women's issues in her home country, and then had to flee it when the Taliban seized control. (Her parents are still in hiding.) Or [Jennie Joseph](https://www.lamaze.org/Connecting-the-Dots/Post/midwife-jennie-joseph-named-women-of-the-year-2022-by-time-magazine-1?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), a crusader for maternal and infant mortality. Or [Amanda Nguyen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda%5FNguyen?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), a Harvard grad, former NASA intern and State Department employee, and founder of Rise, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors (of which she is one); she was a proponent of the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act, and she's been active about protesting -- and bringing attention to -- the increase in violence against Asian Americans. The full list of women also includes Amal Clooney, Kerry Washington, anti-social-media-bullying activist Tracy Chou, Kacey Musgraves, Allyson Felix, NASDAQ CEO Adena Friedman, Amanda Gorman, Sherilyn Ifill, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.
