LOOK AT THIS PIECE. It's magnificent. It was so fun today when all the jewel-watching Twitter accounts and bloggers basically SCREAMED in unison. And Maxima does not get lost under it, which is the best part. She carries it SUBLIMELY.

I also love her ombre gown. It would have been magnificent as it is, and I ALMOST wish she'd just gone without the cape? Did her shoulders need to be covered on some kind of technicality, or was this just a little extra Maxima spice? I admit that the cape seems like it might have been fussy and irritating to wear, but... not gonna lie, it also brings dramatic flair, and that is what I love from Max. She looks mad elegant.

QEII

I cannot let her regalia pass without a moment in the sun of a close-up. I had heard Philip was coming to all of today's events, but he didn't; he was, however, spotted in Windsor yesterday driving a carriage around and looking as spry as one can at his age. So hopefully he's fine and just taking it easy. I am a BIT shocked he didn't want to pop over and wink at Maxima.

I think she looks terrific. I always enjoy when Camilla brings out Maximum Poof with her hair, which may be what's required to make the tiara work. Charles looks jovial, and sunburned, for some reason. Perhaps he's just been at the scotch a bit early.

And then. AND THEN. Lordy. This dress happened. Credit to them for getting the fit on-target, but this thing is dated and terrible and I laughed out loud when I saw it. This is not "Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, future queen, at a banquet." This is "Teri Hatcher, former star of Lois & Clark, attends the Emmys with the cast of her new show, Desperate Housewives." Did Sarah Burton accidentally travel back in time?

It's certainly BETTER when you crop out he skirt. PERHAPS if only the bodice were designed thusly, and at her waist it flared out into a regular skirt? That might have been less dated.

"Well, William, things have gone a bit soggy for me lately at work. I may never get to speak to you again. So I just wanted to say your tailcoat is lovely, Diana's face looks lovely on you, and I'm dueling Camilla at dawn."

I love rooms. I REALLY need to get on with becoming an important diplomatic personage. I wonder how I'm going to pull that off.

I just included this because Camz changed clothes for some reason. I assume Theresa May goaded her into it.

Sophie

And THIS is the only shot I could find of Sophie, at ALL, that wasn't of her back. She attended the dinner as well, but nobody seemed to cover it, which is a terrible shame. [NOTE: I've added a link in the body of the post itself to a screenshot of Sophie in a lovely blue/teal.] Anna at @HRHWessexBlog on Twitter ID'd it for me as a petal-pink Max Mara she's worn before. The cut reminds me strongly of Meghan's Zimmerman from yesterday, and actually, bits of the top are similarly underwhelming.

I just wanted to give a shout-out here to the Queen's amethyst brooch from earlier, and also... I just love seeing her so happy and lively, and the velvet trim on that coat is beyond. Well played, Your Maj.
