2024 US Open - Day 2

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 27: Naomi Osaka of Japan walks on court before playing against Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia during their Women's Singles First Round match on Day Two of the 2024 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 27, 2024 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. The headphones with the matching bows are just the best crowning touch here. So, Naomi walked out in this...

... and then removed the overskirt. Seeing it just sitting there on the chairs is so funny to me. I

Here is what she actually played in, and as you can see, the sneakers ALSO have bows. I also think Naomi, as evidenced by her tears, has been having a hard time getting it all done, and having a special kit like this gave her a little spark of happiness and confidence in a time that's been tough for her.

She wore this version to play Karolina Muchova, and it didn't bless her with a win, but she really DID look better out there I think? Give yourself some grace, Naomi!

Shoe closeups are important. Look how CUTE these are.

Jessica Pegula

As I type this, I am watching her in the semifinal against Karolina Muchova, which has been thrilling. But this little warmup jacket is RIDICULOUS. It's giving her Regina George cutout pits.

Elina Svitolina

"I KNOW, IT LOOKS SO SILLY, WHAT ARE WE DOING." (I'm sure functionally, it's like... maybe some arm compression while leaving the armpits free to get air and drip sweat? But lordy.)

Ashlyn Krueger

It's so much better without the sleeves.

Jessica Pegula

I just enjoy this picture. It makes her look like one of those anglerfish who hang a light in front of their jaws to attract prey.

Iga Swiatek

It was SO HOT during the early rounds of the Open; you can see here how Iga was just soaked. I like the colors, though. It's very My Little Pony.

She often ended up changing into the white version mid-match.

Coco Gauff

The neon here was the recurring theme on Coco...

... and they tweaked the base color. The yellow here looks darker but that MIGHT just be the photo lighting? Anyway, same basic idea, but with a deep blue. I like it.

Emma Navarro

WHAT a tournament Emma had, making it to the semis before running up against Aryna Sabalenka's groundstrokes. I am charmed by this preppy little number.

Shelby Rogers

It's cute in blue, too! Shelby retired after this tournament, as did Danielle Collins, whose picture I don't have. We lost two veterans just as Navarro and Pegula were surging and 16-year-old Iva Jokic arrived. Nature abhors a vacuum, etc.

Elena Rybakina

I sort of like this, and yet also think it looks like a weird grape juice spill.

Sloane Stephens

She often comes out in totally different clors match-to-match, but unfortunately we didn't see enough of her to know this time.

I would've made the skirt blue. Just because, like, we KNOW you have the blue, Novak wears it all the time.

Aryna Sabalenka

You KNOW I am here for hot pink. And I saw her in a pink version - she was wearing it in the shot of her with a mini-me fan. I'm sort of into this one, though.

Andrey Rublev

I'm never mad at these colors. CERTAINLY not anywhere NEAR as mad as he gets at himself.

Madison Keys

I was sorry to see Keys go out early-ish, but at least she got a really good green shade here. Also, I think everyone believed her injury was a lot worse and would keep her out, so way to rehab, Maddie.

Vika Azarenka

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 26: Victoria Azarenka of Belarus returns against Yulia Starodubtseva of Ukraine during their Women's Singles First Round match on Day One of the 2024 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 26, 2024 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Loving all the hot colors, honestly. This is the intelligent commentary you're getting today.

Emma Raducanu

Emma even got the hit of orange on her shoes.

Bianca Andreescu

Bad luck to Bianca that she drew Jasmine Paolini in round one. Also Nike kept it pretty simple here with everyone who isn't Osaka, and honestly, that's probably smart even if I want something wacky.

Qinwen Zheng

She and Vika rocked the separates. I just complimented all the pink and orange but I really do like this shade too. I'm so easy to please today.

Sofia Kenin

SO MUCH green!

This is how I feel about her colors, actually. I love this photo.

Petra Martic

But NOW WE'RE COOKING. Thank you, Petra. This reminds me of a Swatch face I had int he 80s, except it was black and neon green. Also, it was my mom's, and I purloined it at every opportunity because a) I liked it better than mine, and b) sometimes WE WORE TWO AT ONCE. We were SO COOL.

Leylah Fernandez

She and Emma have never been quite the same since the year they faced off in the Open final, but the pleated skirt is great.

Elise Mertens

This kinda looks like she threw together some separates and called it a day.

Donna Vekic

This is giving similar vibes, but with the opposite colors.

I support the pants, BUT IN THAT WEATHER? WOW. It was so hot; I've rarely seen so much sweat on every single tennis court.

Jessika Ponchet

Aw, Wilson, you couldn't make him a matching shirt?!?

Arantxa Rus

I love that her sponsor has a lightning bolt for a logo. I was going to say that it's "so striking," and then realized that's a horrible pun. OR A BRILLIANT ONE.

Francis Tiafoe

BIG FOE!!!! I'm sort of surprised his sweatbands don't coordinate. Not ANGRY about it, obviously. But surprised.

Ben Shelton

All three mens' Olympic medalists bowed out early. Alcaraz probably surprised me the most there, but he'd collected some small injuries and I also think he was REALLY gutted to lose the gold to Djokovic and he didn't look quite the same after that.

Fabio Fognini

Sorry not sorry, sir. Don't dislike the blocky shirt, but am thrilled you went out (barely) swinging to Popyrin.

This point was epic. He went so hard with the rejoicing that Aryna Sabalenka, who was waiting for the court inside, was imitating him (nicely -- she seemed to think it was great).

Tommy's shirt looks like it has a photograph silkscreened onto it, or something. But I can't tell what OF. A... forest? With lampposts?

Taylor Fritz

I Googled to make sure he wasn't injured, and he basically ran this exact photo on his own Instagram with the caption, "This is why you should be careful with the chicken in ." We POISONED HIM!!!! Not very hospitable of us.
