(Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) I still can't believe Lady Gaga declined a pre-show red carpet (this is backstage). If you had told her in 2012 that this would happen, she'd probably assume it'd be because she was in a coma. ## Doja Cat ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2233682966-1757300911.jpg) US rapper Doja Cat performs on stage during the MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 7, 2025\. (Photo by ANGELA WEISS / AFP) (Photo by ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images) Doja Cat did a whole '80s themed set, which was visually really cute and fun, but the song was a forgettable Janet Jackson... what's lower than a B-side? An E-side. ## Ariana Grande in Tamara Ralph ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234220016-1757301024.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Ariana Grande speaks during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by/Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) Ariana wore polka dots on the red carpet, and then changed into this to present Video Vanguard to Mariah Carey. It's fine. It's eye-catching but also not crazy enough to pull focus. ## Ariana Grande ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234227141-1757301077.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Ariana Grande accepts the Video of the Year Award for “Brighter Days Ahead” onstage during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Manny Carabel/Getty Images for MTV) Then she cosplayed the Super Plum Fairy. ## Tate McRae and Ariana Grande ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234226000-1757301069.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Tate McRae and Ariana Grande during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by/Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for MTV) And she wore this to win another award, which sort of looks like she took a dip in the Tar Pits. Tate's dress looks very confused. ## Tate McRae ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234214886-1757300991.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Tate McRae performs during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) I have heard a song of hers maybe once? So I guess this would be twice. It was so generic that I couldn't tell you anything about it except, I guess, that it had words in it. ## Mariah Carey ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2233694555-1757300933.jpg) US singer-songwriter Mariah Carey performs on stage during the MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 7, 2025\. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Billboard via Getty Images) This sweatshirt absolutely feels like she found it on clearance. ## Sabrina Carpenter ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2233685643-1757300924.jpg) US singer Sabrina Carpenter performs on stage during the MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 7, 2025\. (Photo by ANGELA WEISS / AFP) (Photo by ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images) This is a great picture. I like that she's a little messier here than she generally is. ## Sabrina Carpenter ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234225791-1757301061.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Sabrina Carpenter, winner of the “Best Album” award for "Short n' Sweet" poses in the press room during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for MTV) This was HER acceptance dress, and I rather like it. Just the right touch of showgirl. ## Conan Gray ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2233699689-1757300958.jpg) US singer-songwriter Conan Gray performs on stage during the MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 7, 2025\. (Photo by ANGELA WEISS / AFP) (Photo by ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images) I believe this song was called "Vodka Cranberry," and it was pretty good! I was only half paying attention so I don't know why he had to look like an angsty vampire who loves Prince. ## LL Cool J ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234211001-1757300967.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: LL Cool J speaks onstage during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) His red carpet outfit was better! ## LL Cool J ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234219896-1757301016.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: LL Cool J speaks onstage during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) His red carpet outfit was WAY better. ## Rosé ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234214687-1757300983.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Rosé accepts the Song of the Year Award for "APT" with Bruno Mars during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) I don't love the yellow color in the dress with her current headsuit. ## Ricky Martin ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234215003-1757301001.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Ricky Martin performs during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) Ricky sounded a little out of practice, but he's still just full of presence. ## Yungblud ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234222543-1757301031.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: YUNGBLUD performs during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) He did the Ozzy tribute. It was fine. Steven Tyler came out and sang with him, too, and I forgot to get a photo of it, but: He looked like Steven Tyler. ## Ice Spice and Latto ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234223577-1757301040.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: (L-R) Ice Spice and Latto attend the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Noam Galai/Getty Images for MTV) Well, if I'd known this was waiting in the wings, I'd have been more effusive about Ice Spice's original outfit. This looks like some kind of complex physical therapy contraption. ## EJAE, REI AMI and Audrey Nuna ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234224061-1757301047.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: (L-R) EJAE, REI AMI and Audrey Nuna speak onstage during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Manny Carabel/Getty Images for MTV) They are the KPop Demon Hunters singers, from what I understand -- I'm trying to convince the boys to watch with me, and they're not interested, even though they also somehow know all about it as if they HAVE seen it. I am entranced by the girl on the right (Audrey, I assume?), both because of her hair and because it looks like she squeezed her mic so hard that it exploded. ## Busta Rhymes ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2025/09/GettyImages-2234218865-1757301009.jpg) ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Busta Rhymes performs onstage during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Kevin Kane/Getty Images) And he got to perform a tribute to himself, and seemed to have a GRAND old time. As one should! What is the point of a MAUDLIN tribute to oneself?
