Blake Lively in Versace

This is obviously HIGHLY over the top -- and those panels on the sides might be sheer? -- but when else are you supposed to be Over the Top? IT'S THE MET GALA. You're SUPPOSED to show up dressed like a Hampton Court rug.

I know I just said she looked like a Tudor-era floor covering but I swear, it was a compliment. This is pretty great.

Solange in Iris van Herpen

This is also pretty great, in a very different way. This was a combination of the runner-up on her Twitter poll, #4, and #1 -- basically, she wore the durag with the other headpiece attached as WELL, and the durag at one point had a cape that read, "My God wears a durag." It's the most avant-garde option she had; van Herpen is REALLY interesting, and Solange is one of the only people with the sartorial elan to pull her off. Per The Fader, the halo evoked one that was edited out of a magazine shoot she did, and HuffPo says the whole outfit was a statement on how black bodies are often erased from religious fixtures, so she was seeking to celebrate afrocentrism in faith.

Annie looks stricken here but she looks steller in this red. She would have made a beautiful Cardinal.

The exhibit will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute from 10 May to 08 October 2018.

She and Valentino make a good pair.

I wonder how many people accidentally got stabbed by various fashion halos upon this night.

I also hope Anne Hathaway and Amber Heard took their own Who Wore It Best? photo, given that they're both in backless red with starburst headpieces. For my money...

...it's close, but I think Amber takes it. She looks stunning in this. (She is working with Karla Welch now -- or maybe has been for a while? That partnership is really hitting on all cylinders now, though.)

Frances McDormand in Valentino

One of my favorite things about the Met Gala is that you can see various people flarging about in the background; Anne and Frances both came with Mr. Valentino. This is....not what I anticipated from Frances after her awards season lap. It's DRAMATIC.

It's ALSO pants.

Don't you feel like you can just see Cardi B floating into the Grand Hall of some various royal residence in this? She looks resplendent. (I appreciate how many people opted for I'm Going To Look Vaguely Renaissance-Y at this event; it makes it easy to envision them making cutting remarks in barges at their enemies, and/or floating about with a variety of cherubs or, I don't know, discovering gravity.)

This was just a great shot.

I love this Prada dress on Rita, but I agree with our esteemed colleagues Tom and Lorenzo that the tiny yellow bag feels a bit out of place.

Her headpiece is AMAZING though. Can she recycle this for Ascot if she wants to?

This is pretty amazing. She looks like a painting.

I suspect this is one of those gowns that is GLORIOUS in person and kind of underwhelming in photos.

But this halo is really neat. I LOVE how many people went for Intriguing Headgear at this event; it's both a sort of easy way to look as if you've been influenced by religious iconography, but it's also PRETTY.

Do you think you'd get in trouble if you tried to wear this to church on Christmas? I suppose that might be a wee sacreligious.

I can't help it; I think this is kind of amazing. It's BONKERS but she really went for it.

Lily Collins works surprisingly well as Possibly Evil Fashion Nun.

She also told E!, on the red carpet, that she kept forgetting she was wearing this headpiece until she accidentally hit people with it, and I suspect EVERYONE at this event will accidentally running into people with their headpieces.

Joan Smalls in Tommy Hilfiger

She's gorgeous, obviously, but this might feel like it's phoning it in, a bit?

"I KNOW HOW TO TOP IT. LITERALLY. ON MY HEAD."  Bless this sweet summer child. She NEVER phones it in; this is BONKERS MCGEE but also it is truly entertaining. (I watched this interview -- SJP kindly stopped to talk to E! when hardly anyone would; in my experience, she is very generous with reporters -- and the whole time, Andy Cohen was like, "COME ON WE NEED TO GO INSIDE!" One does not want to be late!)

She looks a bit like Alice in Wonderland's Queen of Hearts, out for a very glamourous evening; is it weird that I might enjoy the headpiece, as profoundly multi-dimensional as it is, more than her dress?

She did NOT phone it in as far as her train was concerend, either.
