You can just barely see it here, but she's also wearing -- per Rebecca English at the Daily Mail -- "a gold Cartier shamrock brooch first worn by Queen Alexandra in 1901." Apparently, Queen Alexandra started the tradition of handing out the shamrocks on St Patrick's Day. It's rather illuminating article, actually. I do love that hat.
And I do believe that we really are seeing the era of longer hemlines for Kate, per the Queen's orders. The good news is that this coat is still quite charming and stylish -- I think -- and she doesn't look dowdy. This upcoming Australia/New Zealand tour will really be the proving grounds, though.
It helps that she can still show a little leg; whatever dress she's wearing underneath there is youthfully short. And thank god. Let Kate Be Kate is my feeling: public interest in her outfits has been great in terms of interest in the royal family. And for the designers she's been wearing.
And the back of her coat, in case you were curious. "Is the back pleated?" I heard you cry. "I HAVE TO KNOW."
Belt? Check. Watch? Check. Clutch? Check. Ring? It's go time.
Here's your obligatory Shoe Shot. (These are by a brand called Emmy.)
Even the dog gets a shamrock. (He's -- fittingly -- an Irish wolfhound, and he also looks fabulous in red.)
William is, obviously, wearing his officer's coat. Much less consternation about what to wear on his end, although I suppose you have to be alert about whether or not you're inadvertently whacking people with your sword.
Here's another look for those of you who enjoy a good dashing military uniform and truly, who among us does not?
They do look like they got a little sun, no?
And then the obligatory St Patrick's Day toast -- I could use one right about now, myself, to be totally frank.
I enjoy the idea that Wills is like, "yes, I WOULD like a Guinness. It's been quite a couple of weeks." Cheers and Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all!
