# Well Played: The Women's Gymnastics Finals at Rio 2016 Olympics

The leotards of this year's team have been lovely and colorful and interesting. I applaud them. I think they serviced the athletes fairly well -- my mother was frustrated by the wedgies, but honestly, I think that's an issue for every leotard ever -- and gave them some nice zest without distracting from anything.

These are VERY dramatic. I like them but they also look less like a silhouette of a crest, and more like an evil, plotty tree that wants to wreak ruin.

## Russia

They fought their way to as silver, which I chiefly know thanks to the NBC graphics, because they only deigned to show a Russian gymnast if she was messing up. Way to go, guys. I like the leo, though.

## The Netherlands

The Dutch are always good for a hit of orange, which pleases Dylan intensely because that is his favorite color, and what he likes, he REALLY LIKES. (Case in point: We are watching Great British Baking Show -- though we have to wait on the final until we're home again, because of the husband -- and Dylan is OBSESSED with Mat the Firefighter and CONSTANTLY insists Mat is doing excellent work even when he blatantly is not. The other morning, D insisted on having a soft-boiled egg because Mat once was shown eating one in a montage of his home life. And he keeps randomly being all, "WHY did Mat have to LEAVE? WHY. I LOVE HIM. IT'S NOT ABOUT WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE MOM IT'S ABOUT HAVING FUN.")

Ahem. Where were we? Ah yes: I've decided I'm ready for us to go back to a simpler time when leotards were not shinier than mylar balloons.

## Japan

I'm so mad; the captions the other day initially had these labeled as China, and I noticed the Japanese flag and fixed it and it only saved ONE of my fixes. BOOOOO. Anyway, Japan kept it simple and stuck with the same leotards. They're really unusual and I like them more the longer I look at them.

## Brazil

Brazil kept to the purple/blue color scheme but has sort of a firework-y motif on the front. I should have shown it to you, but I could not resist this shot of her basically scratching her head with her toes. Humans are amazing.

## Germany

Whoa. I did NOT count on neon from Germany. I actually really like it, mostly because it IS so unexpected.

## China

The Chinese team picked a purplish-red color scheme that reminds me of Korea's leos from Day 1\. It's not unattractive, but it seems off the nationalism point a bit more than I traditionally associate with China.

Look how shiny it gets in the light. Also, the leotards from both days had that red seal on the front, so I guess that's the bit they count as most important.

Being able to flip your body in this awkward direction and land on a four-inch bar is BONKERS.

Poetry. I am unabashedly awed by all of these people. I try to tell my kids not to take the miracles of their bodies for granted, but I'm not sure it ever kicks in that the things it can do are spectacular -- and that's BEFORE you even think about training it to do THIS.

## US Gymnastics

They were SO happy and proud, although Biles looked a bit stressed; she seemed a half-step off on a few things the entire night, and I wonder if her mind was wandering because she was annoyed about and/or worried about all the pressure people are putting on her to win gold later. Costas said the other night that \*IF\* she wins gold she'll be the best of all time, and like... dude, she's won worlds three years in a row. Please don't act like she's done nothing if she doesn't win here.

Everyone else is SO TICKLED. NBC had them watch their medal ceremony, and I wonder if they didn't realize they were on-camera doing it, because they dropped the media training (seriously, these ladies don't just pivot on the apparatuses; they spun every single question into, "We're just a great team and we love the team and being a team is great yay team") and got really giggly about how they were nervous and accidentally singing the wrong lines at the wrong time. Raisman was also singing her HEART out. I LOVE when people sing at their medal ceremonies.
