I got a definite Angelina Jolie-meets-Rooney Mara vibe off the white satin windcheater Anne wore to the last Les Mis event, and certainly this awards season needs someone to fill the Very Fair-Skinned Brunette With Short Hair And Dark Lipstick void on this year's award circuit. The dress itself is fairly hideous and hilarious, but here is where she REALLY pushed it into Rooney Mara territory....

Those aren't shoes, they're shinguards for a Lady Gaga soccer team (actually, the first time I saw this, I thought she'd broken her legs and was wearing magic braces). Full marks for the fact that she's somewhat pulling this off -- in the sense that I'm not so overwhelmed that I forget to look at her face -- but it still feels a bit like she's at an absurd rich-folk costume party, and OMG THOSE SHOES. It looks like someone took a tire iron to her legs and she's trying to rebuild them with science and ROBOTS or maybe bionic injections.

Let me be clear: I really hate this whole thing -- the heavy fabric is awful to me; the cape looks like she parachuted in here and left her deflated vessel on her back -- but I hate it in a way that demands I applaud how funny it is. Her semi-smug expression does seem tinged with knowing amusement, as if she's aware of what she's doing and is pretty sure she's going to get away with it, because she is young and unafraid, and dreams are made and used and wasted, and there is no ransom to be paid. But imagine if she'd pulled this out for one of THOSE telecasts. Oh, the facial expressions. EVERY photo on the red carpet would be bombed by skepticism. There WOULD be ransom to be paid. As it is, I can only dream a dream.
