This isn't technically in chronological order, but, come on. Like I wasn't going to start with this. It's amazing. Kate Middleton IS Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Royal Vacation.

So. I love this. The cape is Paul & Joe and it's both expensive and sold out and I want it. It would be SO CUTE with jeans. The skirt is not an actual kira, but -- as I learned at What Kate Wore -- a take on the kira. (There's more info here, but, if I'm reading it correctly, a kira is actually a dress.) The fabric -- which is GORGEOUS -- was woven in Bhutan, but the maker is Ye Olde "Private Dressmaker" of Yore who Kate uses sometimes, and who I've decided is actually William, because he finds sewing to be a meditative art.

If this coat on Kate looks familiar to you, it's because we saw it in 2012 in Scotland, though she's added a belt. I don't LOVE it, but I like it much better WITH the belt.
Here, they were met at the airport -- after apparently a harrowing landing (not unusually harrowing; from what I understand, all landings in Bhutan are harrowing because they involve a 90 degree turn) -- by Princess Chimi Yangzom Wanchuck and Prince Dasho Ugyen Jigme Wangchuck. Let us turn to Wikipedia for more! Apparently, Princess Chimi is the King's half-sister and she only has a BA from Wellesley and a master's from Columbia so THAT'S not impressive or anything. Her husband is ALSO getting his master's at Columbia. Dashing and smart.

Then Kate changed and they met the King and Queen, and there was much ceremony and it was all quite beautiful -- much as King Jigme and Queen Jetsun are. They are just...extremely good-looking people.

I just spent A LOT of time trying to figure out if this is a mural or a GIANT GIANT piece of fabric and I think it's the latter, and I marvel at the logistics of such a huge piece of cloth. Anyway, they're currently at Tashichho Dzong, which is -- per the noted architectural historian Wikipedia -- "a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the city of Thimpu in Bhutan, on the western bank of the Wang Chu. It has traditionally been the seat of the Druk Desi (or "Dharma Raja"), the head of Bhutan's civil government, an office which has been combined with the kingship since the creation of the monarchy in 1907, and summer capital of the country."

You know how they say that a stopped clock is right twice a day? I actually think those beige shoes were the right call here.
Kate and Queen Jetsun Pema actually might have a fair amount to talk about. First, obviously, the care and upkeep of their respective hair, and how they've both decided neither of them have bangs anymore. The Queen went to college in London, so they can also talk about...you know, Selfridges or whatever. She also had a baby in January -- whose name they are announcing on the 16th -- so they can talk about, I don't know, sleep training. Also, apparently Jetsun Pema is a huge basketball fan (and player), so my guess is that they're ACTUALLY talking about Steph Curry.

I feel like I want to read a book about the adventures of these two women.

SPEAKING OF ADVENTURES, we also got what I heard was to be an archery DEMONSTRATION, but apparently there was audience participation.

Kate looks HILARIOUSLY doubtful here, and very much like she's trying not to laugh at him. Oh, William. If it were 1567, your form would have been -- IDEALLY -- much better than this.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH whoops! Isn't that the reporter from the Daily Mail? SO sorry, didn't mean to hit you, shall we call it even?"

Kate also got to throw darts, at which I am sure she is very accomplished due to all the time she's surely spent in her neighborhood pub, doing exactly this.

Or maybe not.

I desperately need the details on this mug and I am not being sarcastic. It's a GORGEOUS MUG.

Everything about this pleases me. I LOVE this dress. It's so quirky and weird and patterned, and the shoes are open-toed AGAIN and the earrings are good and we're just TOTALLY pretending the bangs never happened. (Wills looks good too. Good on you, Wills.)

AND it's a bit leggy. Those shoes might actually be...good? Is that possible? IT'S A BHUTANESE MIRACLE.
