## Sarina Bolden

(Joe Serci / SPP) New Zealand v Philippines, FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, Group A, Football, Wellington Regional Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand - 25 Jul 2023

Sarina scored the first-ever goal for the Philippines in any World Cup, on the way the the country's first-ever WIN in any World Cup. Absolutely thrilling. I watched the clip of their announcers calling the match and they totally cut their mics so that the audience could hear the crowd cheering, and made a point to underline that it was history-making for ANY Philippines football team. What a great moment, and against the home team, too (New Zealand in this case). The crowd seemed awesome about it.

Those striped unis are so good. Argentina has shown the world how iconic a distinctive approach like that can be. I don't hate NZ's either -- it at least has SOME visual texture (which probably isn't a thing, but... it is to me).

## Lindsey Horan

It was wild to hear the announcer say that Horan's best revenge against frustration with the Dutch would be to score right then on a corner... and then she did. Can't script it better.

## Danielle Van de Donk, Lindsey Horan

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/07/shutterstock_editorial_14024525al-1690489995.jpg)

These two are teammates in France when they're not on the national squads, and Danielle made what I thought was a tackle into Horan's plant leg (but which reports call a hip check) that Horan didn't appreciate. I wouldn't have, either; it looked dangerous. But then they squabbled and Horan ended up shoving her, and the ref had to try and make them shake hands and cool down. Horan was already playing on one yellow, and they were down 1-0 at this point; if she'd gotten another yellow, she'd have been out for the next crucial match against Portugal. As a teammate I might have been worried -- and i guess Julie Ertz did get in there and beg her to calm down and just score the goal to shut them up, so she did.

I don't THINK this is the one she scored on, but wow, what a scrum.

This MIGHT be the one she scored on. Regardless, again, how ANYONE gets their head on the ball, much less deflects it to perfection, is a mystery to me.

## Rose Lavelle

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/07/shutterstock_editorial_14024526be-1690489964.jpg)

USA v Netherlands, FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, Wellington Regional Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand - 27 Jul 2023

Credit to Rose Lavelle for the gorgeous corner. I love her. Ever since the last World Cup, when she came on and deployed THE most stunning footwork... she's incredible to watch and she makes the team better when she's in, so I hope her knee rehab has gone well. I wonder if she'll start against Portugal, or if they will decide her energy is what the team needs after halftime. They were SO limp against The Netherlands until the second half.

## Jackie Groenen

I love the Netherlands jerseys, though. The subtle pattern and then solid stripe of orange... they're so good.

## Canada vs Ireland

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2023/07/shutterstock_editorial_14023005x-1690490025.jpg)

Mandatory Credit: Photo by CHINE NOUVELLE/SIPA/Shutterstock (14023005x) (230726) - PERTH, July 26, 2023 (Xinhua) - Adriana Leon (2nd R) of Canada celebrates scoring during the group B match between Canada and Ireland at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Perth, Australia, July 26, 2023\. Australia Perth Fifa 2023 Women's World Cup Group B Can vs Ire - 26 Jul 2023

Canada's black jerseys with the maple leaf are better, but you can't always wear the same ones. The two players just piled on top of each other in goal are quite a tragic pair.

This caption read, "Māori wahine gets ready to walk on field and perform Māori welcome," and I wanted to acknowledge that they've been doing this. If you see "Aotearoa" on the billboards around the stadium, that is the contemporary Māori name for New Zealand.

## Australia vs Nigeria

Tough loss for Oz against Nigeria. I didn't notice the swirl on their jerseys before; just the colors. I like it!

Nigeria went for the slightly less atomic kit, and I sorta miss the mega-green. I like the jersey, but it also looks a bit like a pajama top or something.

This made me laugh -- I have no idea what's happening here, but that facial expression on Alanna Kennedy is the one I make 99 percent of the time when a soccer player goes down. I just ALWAYS assume they're BS'ing (and then feel really terrible if it turns out they aren't). There was one last night where a Dutch player was trying to act like she'd had her nose bashed in and I couldn't tell that our player even touched her? Although our players were a little spicy throughout, it's true.

## Linda Caicedo (18) of Colombia vs Kang Chae-rim (23) of South Korea

I like the colorful side panels on both of these. They're both very... flag-celebratory? Yes.

This was captioned as Megan Rapinoe, but I'm pretty sure we can all agree that isn't Megan Rapinoe. Anyway, this is what the women wore the first day to get off the team bus, and I LOVE IT.

## Alyssa Thompson

Alyssa is our youngest player, at 18, and I hope she's enjoying every second of this. Also for a second I thought she had a cool rainbow accent, until I realized it's the strap on her lanyard blowing around.

## Alex Morgan

Those are some jazzy sneaks, Alex. They're like wedge trainers.

These are just very slick suits, and I wish so many of them had not worn the dopey sunglasses to go with them. Lynn's shades here are much more the right speed.

WOO. Get in there ladies, Hopefully the first half against the Netherlands was the wake-up call they needed.
