Let's start at the very beginning, which I'm told is a very good place to start. This is at the time of her first movie role, in a Sidney Poitier crime comedy, A Piece of the Action.

That is backstage at Dreamgirls in 1982, and Sly looks glazed and weird and also maybe like he's recently been punched in the mouth. Rocky III had come out months prior, so he wasn't filming that, at least. Maybe someone DID punch him in the mouth.

TV-wise she was doing Search for Tomorrow I believe, but movie-wise, nothing until 1988. People really did sleep on her talent. She, however, is kicking off a LIFETIME of loving bright colors and big statements.
