I love this for her. In 2011, she'd done Easy A and gotten a Globe nod for it, but was two months away from the premeire of Crazy, Stupid, Love. We were new riders of the Emma Stone Train. Putting her in Lanvin is interesting because it's a standout designer -- one with a tremendous history but also which you don't see very often on a red carpet (or so it feels). So that on its own is an away-from-the-pack pick, but then you throw in the cool black-and-white pattern and hit of hot pink lip, and honestly this is one of her better looks PERIOD. (Yes, I would have road-tested a bracelet.)

And, Lanvin again! This was the Schiaparelli/Prada/Impossible Conversations year, and this doesn't have enough whimsy to be a tip to Schiaparelli, to me. It's just twee. She looks SUPER proud of the craft project she made, and of how successful she was in creating a hairdo that Bianca Stratford in 10 Things I Hate About You would have looooooved.

Another unusual designer choice. Charles James, the subject of the exhibit, was known for extravagant ball gowns and technical prowess -- "exacting tailoring" and structire, per Wikipedia. This strikes me more as an ode to Schiaparelli's pink that would have worked better in 2012. I LOVE the colors, and I think she looks superb in that skirt, but I don't know if the top is an ode to "exacting tailoring" as much as it is to sports bras.

I could not resist this throwback to when these two dated. She is engaged to someone else now, and I'm sure they are both happy in their lives and that this was the right decision for them both, but boy they were cute together and I adore that his face seems to be saying, "I am REALLY LUCKY."

Perhaps it's the darkened hair, but NONE of this feels very Emma Stone to me. It's more... CW Starlet In A Couture Back Brace.

I BELIEVE this was her first Met on the Louis Vuitton deal, and for "Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," this is a hard pass from me. I know not all designer go in for the theme, but as Ghesquiere has collected starlets, he has seemed bent on making them walking billboards for his runway lines at the Met Gala rather than expaning and having fun with the form. There ARE exceptions, but this isn't one of them, to me. Unless Mary Magdalene was also a gifted sexy drum major.

And while she looks adorable in this, does its 80s aesthetic alone qualify as camp? And why is her hair wet? Then again: Looking cute in the face of some obstacles is still tough, and thus a win.

Here is Mamie, Meryl's eldest. I'm assuming she and Grace would have come on their mother's arm, and I bet you she would have worn something more imaginative than this? 2010 was a different time. People didn't care as much about the theme.

Both of these need a hoik, but WOW, Mamie's is so pretty. I also enjoy that her lipstick matches her sister's frock.

And then BOOM, Mamie busted this out. This is a scrolldown fab for me. The harness looks hella painful and it's odd on her boobs, but that skirt is fun as hell.

This year was the OTHER time Nicolas Ghesquiere co-hosted, and Cate -- as another co-host -- accordingly wore Balenciaga. This has all the elements of a dreamy dress but instead it's a hairy mess. Hey, that sentence rhymes, and that bodice is baggy sad times.

I'm skipping ahead in the chronology to the OTHER time (that I know of) when Nicolas dressed a co-host, as he would have for Emma this year. In 2016, Taylor here wore Louis Vuitton for Manus x Machina, and it hasn't aged that well for me. She said she was going for "futuristic glam robot" which I don't think was the cleverest interpretation of the confluence of machine-made and handmade. It's like they read "machina" and went, "Okay, oh, great, machines, robots, yay."

This doesn't seem DESIGNED. Just sewn.

I wondered why Jennifer was so in the tank for Louis Vuitton, and it turns out she must just have a personal relationwhip with Nicolas himself, because she wore Balenciaga to the 2005 gala (you'll see it later today) and then here and in 2008. I like her Balenciaga phase much better.

This is very elegant. It also looks like a tuxedo for a chair, but man, you look at the simplicity and skill of this and then some of the overwrought shit he's churned out with LV and it's a wonder that they're from the same man.

I believe Bee wore Balenciaga in 2010 as well, but this one reminds me of Chloe's from 2007: so basic that it's kind of... a non-starter, even though the color is great.

You can see the beginnings of where he goes with Vuitton in this, from one of his final seasons with Balenciaga. The shoes are truly a grievance worth filing.

And, now we're into the LV era. Ros looks totally dishy from the neck up, and as if she has a flaccid dildo hanging from her sweatband waist.

Michelle often gets the best, or at least most sedate, of his work for LV.

I enjoy this giant doily more than I did then, I think because it's very precisely cut.

What in the sweet hot hell was even happening here.

And this all shrank, yes?

What did they do to this perfectly nice polka-dot dress?

Wait, why is this dress's excrement better than the dress itself? Take the ruffle portion and turn THAT into something, dude.

I am also not sure this knows what it is.

She gave birth five months prior to this, and all they did for her was basically design an exterior nursing bra?

That bodice is not great, but Sansa still came out ahead of Lea.

In fairness, her all-girls school is VERY strict about neck skin.
